Sheila F. Herbst, 89, of Berwyn, PA, passed away May 9, 2023.
Born July 12, 1933 in St Louis, MO, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Emmett and Rosalind Wood
(nee Keely) Fleming.
Sheila was a graduate of the University of Illinois and worked as a parasitologist. She and Dave married
in 1956 and lived in Detroit until moving to Palo Alto, California, where Dave completed graduate studies.
In 1961, they moved to Wayne PA where they have since resided. She and Dave had five children who
attended St. Monica School. Sheila continued to attend St. Monica for the remainder of her life and
volunteered at the church thrift shop, and in the school cafeteria.
Sheila was proud of her Irish heritage. (St. Patrick’s Day was a big celebration for her each year.) She
was actively engaged in her children’s endeavors and was a very supportive and loving mother and
grandmother. She enjoyed bowling, swimming at the local YMCA throughout her life, loved opera, was an
avid card player, and treasured and appreciated long-lasting friendships.
Sheila was the beloved wife of David Richard Herbst; loving mother of Margaret “Peggy” Sanders (Gene),
Joseph Herbst, Kathleen Hester, Mary Paynic, and Julia Herbst (Jim Wentz); adoring grandmom of Matt
and Chris Herbst, Katherine and Bridget Gunther, Devon and Riley Hester; and dear sister-in-law of
Bernice Fleming. She was predeceased by her brother Patrick Fleming.
