Walter L Markham

Walter L. Markham of Alpine, New Jersey passed away on July 6, 2022. He was 77 years old. Walter leaves behind his beloved partner of many years Laurie Murphy. He is survived by his beloved four children: Colleen E. Markham and her husband Matthew Fizulich; Kelli M. Markham and her husband Dr. Maciej Nowakowski; Walter L. Markham II; and Daniel F. Markham. Walter is also survived by two grandchildren, Shannon V. Markham and Quinn Francis Roman Nowakowski, and a stepgrandson Alex Nowakowski, two nieces Mary C. Markham and Bridget E. Markham, and a sister-in-law Nancy Markham. Walter also leaves behind his dear friend and mother of his four children Susan M. Markham. Walter was predeceased by his brother James J. Markham III in 2017.
Walter was born and raised in Englewood, New Jersey and was a member of St. Cecilia's Parish. He attended St. Cecilia's Grammer School and graduated from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey. He received degrees from St. Peter's College (B.S.), in Jersey City, New Jersey and from the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research (M.A.) in New York City.
Walter served proudly in the United States Marine Corps for three years, in infantry battalions in the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions.
Walter began his career in finance in 1969 in the Senior Management Training Program at Chemical Bank New York Trust Company (Now JPMorgan) and remained with that institution until his retirement, as a Managing Director in the Global M&A Group, in 1999. He held various lending, restructuring, and advisory positions in the National, International, Real Estate, and Investment Banking Divisions during his career.
After several years as a consultant to financial institutions and private companies, Walter returned to full-time employment in 2015 with the United States Treasury Department, in the Office of Comptroller of the Currency, as a Bank Examiner. He remained with the Treasury Department until his death.
Visitation will be at the Barrett Leber Funeral Home, 148 Dean Dr., Tenafly, New Jersey on Friday July 8, 2022 from 4-8 PM. Funeral Mass at St. Cecilia's Church, 55 W. Demarest Ave., Englewood, New Jersey on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 9:30 AM. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
