Walter Tiffany Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Dec. 27, 2006.
Tiffany, Walter Checkley ("Check") Age 81, of Grand Marais (Gunflint Lake) died at sunset on Christmas Day, following a brief battle with cancer. Check was born in Los Angeles on Aug. 4, 1925, and came to St. Paul as a teenager with his brother, Frank Tiffany, to attend St. Paul Academy, where he graduated in 1942 and promptly joined the Marine Corps during World War II. Following the war, Check attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he met his wife of 51 years, Adel Parsons Tiffany, with whom he had four daughters, and who preceded him in death in 1999. After joining the San Francisco office of The St. Paul Companies in 1947, Check moved his family to St. Paul to work in the home office of The St. Paul, where he worked as an underwriting executive until 1982, when he took early retirement to move with Adel to their remote cabin on Gunflint Lake on the edge of the Boundary Waters, where they enjoyed frequent canoe trips. Check also enjoyed many athletic pursuits in earlier years, including racing ‘C' & ‘E' boats on White Bear Lake with his Uncle Mike, playing tennis, curling at the St. Paul Curling Club, handball and racquetball at the St. Paul Athletic Club, in addition to jogging and cross-country skiing. Check had a profound love of the BWCA wilderness area, which he demonstrated through his service on the board of St. Paul YMCA Camp Widjiwagan. He was particularly involved with starting Widji's winter snowshoeing program. In recent years, Check served on the board of the North Shore Healthcare Foundation in Grand Marais and was active in other area community organizations, including the Gunflint Trail Fire & Rescue Assoc. Check remarried in 2004 and is survived by his second wife, Cynthia Imsdahl-Tiffany, and his four daughters, Carol Rone, Laura Tiffany (Ned Foster), Peggy Tiffany of Marlboro, Vt., Diane Tiffany; and step-daughter, Lara Imsdahl. He also had six grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Grumps", Jerusha and Jessica Rone, Ben and Page Foster, Lindsay and Emily Tiffany - will also miss him. Above all, Check will be remembered for his boundless love of family. He was a devoted and generous husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed nothing more than opening a nice bottle of wine and lingering over a good meal, surrounded by his loved ones. A memorial service will be held in Grand Marais at a date and time to be announced later. Memorials preferred, either to St. Paul YMCA Camp Widjiwagan (to help less fortunate children attend the camp), or to the North Shore Healthcare Foundation, P.O. Box 454, Grand Marais, MN 55604, to support healthcare initiatives in Grand Marais. Friends will be received today, Wed., Dec. 27 from 5-8 at the home of Carol Rone, 1900 Field Ave. in St. Paul.

We had to stop for a moment to realize we have been coming to Gunflint winter and summer for 30 years. First with Frank and Lilian Ilenda who introduced us to Check. He has been a friend and wonderful neighbor we have counted on for news and guidance over those years. If we were working near the road he would always stop for a friendly word or two before continuing on his way. Check would plow our drive to make our arrival in winter easier. We helped with some finishing touches on the sauna at their cabin. Sharing some heat and conversation when it was done will remain a fond memory. Check was one of those people whose community spirit and neighborliness made Gunflint the kind of place we cherish.

Check was a great neighbor to our family in St. Paul where he invited us to visit his cabin on Gunflint lake. We stayed there with Ward and Shotsie Johnson and almost immediately bought a little piece of land on Gunflint with the Johnsons and Wayne and Priscilla Faris. The Johnson later decided to go to Encampment forest and the Faris' to Madeline Island but we stayed and were neighbors for over 30 years on Gunflint lake. Karen and I often toasted Check for introducing us to Gunflint. Check was always thoughtful, helpful and analytical. My last conversation with him was in the fall when he called me at home to suggest that I to get a hold of the county commissioner to assist in getting the approval for building a garage. He was always looking out for other people. He will be missed by all but certainly those on Gunflint lake.

Hi Guys!
We see so many families through the years and some get to be more like friends than patients. Your family are one of those families. We will miss seeing your Dad every 3 months faithfully, we could set our calandar by his visits. Take care of yourselves and know you are in our prayers.

I can't believe Check is gone. I just received his xmas card and he said nothing about being sick. I will miss him but I have the memories of working with one of the finest men in the company for 30 years and in our No Smoking group. Your family should be very proud of you.

I will miss Checkerooni so much -- his eyes lighting up when he gave me a rough time, his laugh when I gave it back to him, his friendship. He made my life richer.

Dear Cindy,
We are very sorry to hear the news about Check. Our sympathy and prayers are with you and all your family. We feel very fortunate that we had the opportunity to meet Check and enjoyed our visit to his very special place on Gunflint. He was a very interesting and vibrant person who had a great influence on his beloved north county, and will be greatly missed.
