Dr. William E. Scott, Jr., Emeritus Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024. He was born January 26, 1929, to William and Inez Scott in Lafayette, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his lovely bride of 65 years, Jean Wooster Scott.
Bill was a true patriot, a scholar, and a Veteran. In 1949, Bill joined the U.S Navy as an aviation cadet, eventually serving as a carrier pilot and officer. His military service instilled in him resilience, leadership and a strong sense of duty. After completing his service, Bill returned to Indiana to pursue higher education. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Indiana University in 1955. He headed to Purdue University for his master's and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. After graduation, his career at Indiana University brought him back to Bloomington.
Throughout his life, Bill wove principles of organizational behavior management into his work, making significant contributions in his field. His legacy includes numerous papers, journal publications and contributions in many books. He was a dedicated researcher and advocate for the principles in life he felt strongly about and was a member of many related honorary and professional organizations.
He was a founding member of the Seven Oaks Charter School; spent summers at Zup's Resort on Lac La Croix Ontario, Canada fishing for Walleye with family and friends and celebrating with a big fish fry when he returned home; biked hundreds of miles on his Schwinn around Bloomington. Bill was lucky enough to participate in The Hoosier Heroes Honor Flight a few years ago with his great friend, Jack Schmit, escorting him.
He was a father to Cynthia Holt and Kimberly Spicer, and a loving grandfather to Lauren McClave; Brooke Hoffa; Whitney Hanna; Cameron Voyles; Eleanor Young; and Shane Spicer. He was further blessed with great-grandchildren Holt and Henry McClave, Claire and Lucas Hoffa, and Elizabeth and Clara Voyles, who brought him immense joy and pride.
