"A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world." - Agatha Christie
A beautiful and kind woman, Yolanda C. Rodriguez passed away April 23, 2023, at the age of 76.
Yolanda was born September 29, 1946, in Alice, Texas to Luis Lopez Contreras and Estanislada Robles Contreras. Her father, a WWII veteran was stationed overseas and was a Purple Heart recipient. He later worked as a carpenter. Yolanda was very close to her parents and loved her sisters Maria Luisa "Lulo" Contreras and Maria Del Socorro "Cora" Contreras very much. After completing her GED, Yolanda went on to obtain her certification in computer keypunch from Del Mar College.
Yolanda met her husband Armando G. Rodriguez at a high school dance in Alice, Texas. The two were blessed with 60 years of marriage together. Armando and their four sons were her world, and she focused her attention on making sure her boys were always well taken care of. She cherished the memories they made on family trips to Astroworld-Houston, Hermann Zoo, NASA, and camping at Lake Mathis. Yolanda enjoyed cooking and sharing special recipes with her sons that she had learned from her parents. She made sure all four boys graduated from college, one even with a master's degree. She was very proud of all their achievements in life. She taught her sons to be generous to others, to study and work hard, and to never give up on accomplishing your goals.
Yolanda started her career in computer keypunch, working at her husband's place of employment - AJAX Plumbing Supply. She then transferred to the HEB headquarters in Corpus Christi, doing data entry. When HEB relocated their headquarters out of Corpus Christi, she chose to stay with her family in Corpus and began working for the Naval Air Station - Corpus Christi, doing computer work. One funny, hair-raising story that could have been a bad experience is when Yolanda entered NAS Corpus Christi to go to work and failed to see military police stopping traffic for a large aircraft that was landing on the airstrip. Yole proceeded through the crossing, in her Chevy Nova, and while glancing out of the corner of her eye, viewed a large jet airplane that buzzed by the top of her car with the loud engines roaring. Needless to say, she became more cautious each time she traveled to work. She later transferred to work at the Corpus Christi State School, where she remained until her retirement.
A loving and generous woman, Yolanda was always willing to help people. She was a devoted Catholic, and a long-time member of Most Precious Blood Church. In her later years, when she was unable to attend Mass, she enjoyed watching EWTN. Yolanda also loved taking care of and loving on her dogs. She had Chiquita, the loving chihuahua; Lucky, a loyal dachshund; Tigger, a dachshund she loved even though he would often try to bite her; and Pickles, a dachshund she loved receiving kisses from. She enjoyed boiling chicken for her and feeding her endless treats. She loved all Mexican cuisine, vanilla milkshakes, pan de polvo, pan dulce, or chocolate for dessert, washed down with a diet soda. When her boys were younger, she enjoyed taking them to the movie theatre and renting movies to watch together at home. She also liked watching Matlock, Perry Mason, Bob Newhart, Molly B. Polka Party, and Svengoolie on TV.
Yolanda leaves behind her beloved husband Armando G. Rodriguez; her son and daughter-in-law Luis and Carol Rodriguez; her son Armando Rodriguez Jr.; Her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Dawn Rodriguez; her son and daughter-in-law Mark and Angie Rodriguez; her grandchildren Kelsey Rodriguez, Ryan Rodriguez, Christopher Rodriguez, Ethan Taliaferro, and Matthew Rodriguez; her great-grandchildren Mallory Rodriguez and Damian Rodriguez; her nieces Viola, Yvette, Kimberly, and Yvonne; and her dog Tigger. She is reunited with her parents, her sisters, her niece Cindy, and her beloved fur babies Chiquita, Lucky, and Pickles.
To honor Yolanda's life, a visitation will be held from 5 PM - 9 PM on Monday, May 1, 2023, at Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Service - Morgan Ave, with a Rosary to be recited at 6:30 PM. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the Corpus Christi Cathedral, followed by interment at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
