Eleanor Martin Obituary

Eleanor Beckman Martin, widow of architect Albert R. Martin, died Saturday, October 14, 2006 in Charlottesville, VA, where she has been living since 1993 with her sister, Sylvia Warner.

Born September 21, 1906, in Naperville, II she was the daughter of the late Bernard Christian Beckman and May Ballou Beckman.

Eleanor was a graduate of Wells College, B. Litt graduate study at St. Hugh's, Oxford. She was president of the Chicago Wells Club, 1st vice president of the Wells Alumnae association, a trustee of the college, chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee, and a recipient of the Wells College Alumnae Award. She was also a cofounder and life member of the Music Center of the North Shore, founder and president of the Woman's College Board, co-founder and member of the Executive committee of Chamber Music Chicago, co-founder and member of the Executive Committee of the Mexican Festival de Musica de Camara.

Eleanor is survived by her children, Michele Elizabeth Martin of Bearsville, NY and Albert Rankin Martin III and his wife, Anette of Oakland, CA; two grandchildren, Hans Martin and Karin Gregg and her husband, Christopher; and one great-grandson, Andrew Gregg.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Chicago area.

The family expresses their appreciation to the staffs of the Healthcare Center of the Colonnades and Hospice of the Piedmont for all of their kind assistance.

The family suggests that any desired memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 2200 Old Ivy Road, Suite 2, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
