Grace, Thank you so much for calling me early this morning regarding Jim's untimely passing. My deepest sympathy to you, his children and family. Words escape me as I am still shocked of the news. I new and fly fished with Jim for over 20 years and shared his valued company and many magical times on the water back in his beloved glades. Jim never needed a GPS or a compass since he new the vast stretches of mangrove swamp from horizon to horizon like the lines on his sun weathered hands. He'd always greet me and/or my son at the dock with a friendly smile always sporting his shimmering long pony-tail and his contagious enthusiasm for giving his dedicated clients and friends a memorable day in the backcountry. Climbing aboard his aging yellow-sided flats boat was like stepping aboard a magic carpet that with Jim at the helm would soon transport us through the tangled maze of mangroves to the wondrous world of the backcountry where dreams of catching tarpon, snook and reds was a reality thanks to Jim's keen senses and uncanny eyesight. Jim would expertly pole through the world of skinny water all day under the hot Florida sun with never a complaint like a stealthy hunter stalking his quarry. You see... Jim's love as mine for sight fishing was the holly grail of fly fishing. Toiling under the sun's heat was all part of the glorious game we loved. If it was easy Jim probably would never had chosen the game, for it wasn't challenging enough for the skills of the like's of Jim Nickerson. I was so very privleged to share so many wondrous times with Jim on those backcountry flats and to have known him as a friend.
I will sorely miss his skilled and friendly company on the water. Hopefully, his life-ever-after will keep the sun in his face, the wind at his back and his line tight to a fish.
Again, my deepest sympathy.
I will miss my friend Jim.
