Cora Dexter Obituary

COLUMBIA CITY: Cora Elizabeth Dexter, 93, of Columbia City, died Friday morning, May 7, 2010 at her home.
She was born March 6, 1917 in Morocco, a daughter of George and Bertha (Fenters) Dexter. Her formative years were spent in Newton County. She graduated from Morocco High School in 1935.
She worked at the DeMotte Hotel for two years before moving to Abingdon, Ill., where she began working for Blue Bell Wrangler Jeans. In 1951, she transferred to the Columbia City plant where she worked until 1968 when she went to Weatherhead Plastics. Cora retired in 1984.
Following her retirement, she was a volunteer driver for Whitley County Memorial Hospital Meals on Wheels for 16 years, was active in the Christmas Bureau from 1970s until 1996 and the Community Christmas on the Square.
Cora received the Heart of Gold Award in 1996 for her support and cookies made for her grandson, Matt, and the Columbia City High School Soccer team and in 2003 for her work with the elderly in private homes and at the Senior Citizen Center.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and held many church offices. Cora was best known for her flowers and sharing of her garden produce. She made sure there were flowers on the pulpit at First Baptist every Sunday.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Sharon (Charles David) Persons of Columbia City; and a grandson, Matthew Persons, who was the pride of her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Adeline Lomax, Edna Dexter, Eva Courson, Irene Courson, Inez Dexter and Vera Jane Rolls; and a brother, Andrew Dexter.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
The committal service will be 2 p.m. CST Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery in Morocco.
