Santo Campolo Obituary
NEWARK: A Funeral Mass for Santo Eugene Campolo, 79, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Saturday, July 27, 2013, with Rev. JCP Sullivan, Parish Priest as celebrant, Fr. Bob Penhallurick and Fr. William Hritsko as concelebrants. Inurnment will be held at a later time in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Gene, a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio on Thursday, July 25, 2013. He was born in Newark, Ohio on January 25, 1934 to the late Eugene J. and Elizabeth (DiGiandomenico) Campolo.
He was a 1952 graduate of Newark High School and then attended Muskingum College. During this time, Gene was quite the athlete, playing both baseball and football. As a catcher, Gene caught Bob Feller and Satchel Paige. He played in the Heart of Ohio Baseball League and was drafted as a catcher by the Philadelphia Phillies, but chose to continue with his education. He completed his studies at Muskingum and earned a degree in business, political science and sociology. Gene eventually took over the family grocery, Campolo's Market and Catering, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement. He was also a member of the Newark Maennerchor.
Gene is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Patty (Atwood) Campolo, of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Michael and Ruth Campolo of Newark; his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Jerry Dixon of Heath; his grandchildren, Bryan, Matthew, Alexander, and Maria Campolo, Kelly, Anthony, Hannah, and Wyatt Dixon; his brother, Anthony J. Campolo of Granville; his niece, Stephanie Campolo; his aunt Mary Jo DiGiandomenico of Heath; his uncle Robert Atwood of Florida; his Godchildren, Kelly Covert, Adam Covert, Jeanne Rian, Jennifer Vermillion, Barry Roe, Tracey Wilson, and Stacey Spring; and many cousins.
Friends and family may call from 4-8 P.M., Friday, July 26, 2013 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, Ohio, where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 P.M.

I am sorry to hear of your loss and Gene's passing. Gene was a wonderful and funny gentleman. I cannot think of the two of you without thinking about your wonderful lasagna! My kids still refer to the two of you as "the people that Mamaw & Papaw always did stuff with when we were little". My prayers and condolences are with you.

I remember how highly my mother thought of your father. She would share stories about ordering trays of food from your father's market for my brother, Rodney Barndollar's sporting events. Tony, Mike, and all of the Campolo family,
I am so sorry for the deep loss of your brother, father, mentor, partner and friend. One of the high points of when I lived on Church Street was taking a walk with my boys when they were small and stopping at the market to buy bread, or deli, or other grocery needs. Gene made the visit special with his booming voice and joking ways.
All of the Campolo family will be much in my prayers. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Gene. I have known Gene since 1949 when we played football together for Newark High school for three years. I always remember Gene as feisty competitor as we bumped heads for three years as we both were linemen. Also, I have fond memories of the support his family gave to our teams, especially the good stuff from their store.
Recently when I was looking at some photos from our time at Newark High school that my parents kept, one was of Gene and some of our teammates receiving our uniforms prior to the 1951 season. Gene was a great guy.

My heart aches to learn that this man, a loving father to everyone, has left us. He rescued me once, a known stranger at the time, sacrificing much of his time and money. After that, I learned from others that he was one of Newark's finest.

Patty, We are so sorry for your loss. You know how much we lt loved Gene and were always thrilled to run into you two out and about. I have great memories of you and Gene when you were young and I was a little girl. I remember a baseball field behind the YMCA where my dad played and Gene had me right there next to him on the bleachers. Our kids remember the store and you and Gene with very happy memories also. My family was saddened to hear of the passing of Gene, his smile brightened any day. As a child he helped me count out my money and helped me figure out how to purchase the most with the change I had. I am so sorry to hear of Gene's passing. As kids we walked to the store and turned in pop bottles for change then bought penny candy at Campolo's market. He always had a smile for us. A true gem.
