POMARIA — Melvin Vaughn Bowers, 78, died Friday, February 23, 2018, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on June 18, 1939 in Newberry, he was the son of the late William Pinkney and Lottie Krell Bowers. He served in the S.C. National Guard and worked for Package Corporation of America (formerly Owens-Illinois). He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he had served as church treasurer, Sunday School superintendent and had been very active in church as long as his health permitted. Mr. Bowers was a member of the Woodmen of the World and a 40 year Life Member of Pomaria Masonic Lodge #151. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and as well enjoyed farming and bird watching.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Valeria Stuck Bowers; sons, Michael (Tangila) Bowers and Warren (Tina) Bowers both of Pomaria; a daughter, Devonna (Ronnie) Summer of Newberry; a sister, Freda (Buck) Miller of Aiken; a brother-in-law, Odell (Pam) Stuck of Pomaria; grandchildren, Brandon (Sarah) Bowers, Will Summer, Kane Summer, Zachary Bowers and Preston Bowers and a great-granddaughter, Romney Ann Bowers.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 25, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or to Boy Scout Troop #76, 622 Hope Station Road, Pomaria, SC 29126.
Active pallbearers were Doug Miller, Charlie Stuck, Tim Stuck, Dean Fellers, Gene Fellers, Steve "Boo" Bouknight and Steven Johnson.
