Richard Tauber Obituary

Richard Harold Tauber was born on June 30th, 1944, in Paterson, New Jersey, alongside his fraternal twin brother Bob. He was welcomed home by his mother Carolyn (Midge) Greenberg, his father Eugene Tauber, and his older brother Stuart. Dick spent most of his childhood in South Orange, NJ. He developed a love for theatre, became the President of New Jersey Temple Youth, and graduated from Colombia High School in 1963. In 1967, he graduated with a BA in Theatre from Denison University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He studied at University of Michigan and Columbia University and began pursuing technical theatre work in addition to acting in New York City. He worked at "Shakespeare in the Park" under the direction of the famed Joseph Papp and later joined the crew for the original Broadway production of Godspell where he ran lights on over 800 shows. He met Marjorie Hirschberg in an acting class in Greenwich Village and they were married in 1973. Dick then became the Dean of Students and Marjorie the Head of the Drama Program at The Darrow School in New Lebanon, NY. In 1978, they celebrated the birth of their first child, Ethan. In 1981, they moved to Atlanta, GA, where Dick had been hired to work at the newly established CNN, and where he would continue to work for the next 32 years. Dick and Marjorie bought a house and had their second child, Elizabeth, in 1983. The family spent many happy days together until 1997 when Marjorie passed away from ALS. During his time at CNN, Dick ran the Satellite Desk and became Vice President of Transmission Systems and New Technology. In 2013, after retiring from CNN, he was inducted into the Space and Satellite Hall of Fame. He became President of the Board of Directors of the Southeast Chapter of Space and Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), which he helped to found in 2005. He also received three Emmy Awards for his work at CNN: The first was in 1986 for his part in Turner Broadcasting System Inc.'s "Goodwill Games"; the second in 2002 for CNN's coverage of 9/11; and, the third, a Technical Emmy, in 2007 for CNN's mobile, IP, news-gathering system. Dick was also vital in CNN's groundbreaking coverage of the First Gulf War. In addition to being very passionate about his work, Dick was an avid movie lover and delighted in blaring classic rock from his car speakers. He loved to tell jokes and anecdotes and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was an incredibly kind soul, extremely generous and helpful to everyone he knew and mentored many people over the years. He is survived by his two children and two brothers. He will be greatly missed by colleagues, friends and family. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM April 13, 2018 at Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care with interment to follow at Crest Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements made by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care 770-451-4999. Tauber, Richard

We remember Dick fondly as we would meet at least once each year at some television broadcast event and share stories and experiences. Can't believe it has been two years since we lost a great guy. His passing was followed just a few days later by our own son Mike. Both were great guys dedicated to being the best.

I just learned of Dick's passing. We were high school homeroom classmates for the three years. Since we were grouped alphabetically, brother Robert was there too. I remember them both as two genuinely decent guys. It's been over 50 years yet we shared some great memories before we all went off into the world of graduate degrees, jobs, marriages and families. I am not surprised to read about Dick (Dickie, as he was called), and his career moreover the wonderful comments left in his memory. I am quite moved by their words.
My sincere condolences to "Bobbie" and the rest of this family.

Dick was one of a kind, a friend and industry colleague who just made life better for everyone he met. You are already sorely missed.

I met Dick when I was a junior Sales Engineer fresh out of the Navy, terrified to be walking around CNN, and sent by my company just to meet him. He asked me really hard questions, then helped me find the answers. My last meeting with Dick was at NAB a few years back, we had dinner and he insisted I have a Bloody Mary because the tomato juice was good for me.

I will always remember him as a kind man, happy to share his views on our industry, and how to order a proper Bloody Mary.

I hope Dick's family knows just how important he was to the satellite industry, and how deeply he will be missed. He was a fixture, a presence, a towering asset to policy discussions and a problem-solver. In addition, he was just an all-round really nice guy. He will be missed.

Dick was a colleague, a competitor and a friend. He was one of the small group of satellite managers who decided to take on the international satellite system and form the Interunion Satellite Operations Group - and succeeded. As long-time chair of the ISOG - in conferences from Bangkok to Barbados - Dick led the group with courtesy, respect and knowledge. He will be missed

Dick was my mentor at CNN and more like a second father than a boss. He taught me a lot about satellite communications but it was the lessons about kindness, compassion and integrity that were most important. Im going to miss you. If the measure of a man is how many people loved him, then Dick was a true giant of a human being.

Richard and Marjorie were good friends at Darrow. We helped babysit each other's children. I greatly missed them when they moved to Atlanta. I am so sorry for their and want to share my condolences with Ethan, Elizabeth and their families.
