Theodore Hughes Obituary

Theodore "Ted" Wilson Hughes

On February 9, 2022, Theodore Wilson Hughes crossed over the river to rest in the shade of the tree. From misery and temptation, he is forever set free. He will now abide with angels that glide with glorious ease.

Born in Massies Mill, on September 18, 1935, Theodore Wilson Hughes was the son of the late Lewis Hudson and Pauline Wilson Wood Hughes.

Ted was an amazing man with a quick wit, a lover of history, and a talent for woodworking and restoration. He retired from the Virginia Department of Highways where he served on the bridge crew as superintendent. After his retirement he started Chalklevel Carriage and Buggy Works a business to restore and build horse drawn carriages and vehicles. His talents also led to moving and restoring the Blue Ridge Railroad Caboose which now stands at the entrance to the Piney River trailhead. Ted and Jane also completely restored Proffitt's General Store building.

Ted was a member of Massies Mill Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Fleetwood Harmony Masonic Lodge, the Sons of the American Revolutionary War, and the Sons of the Veterans of the Confederacy.

He is survived by the love of his life, Sarah Jane Proffitt Hughes, whose marriage thrived with love and grace for 66 years; his daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Jim Coyner of Richmond, and Susan and Roger Huffman of Lowesville, who were his joy and comfort; forever his pride and joy were his grandchildren, Amy McTyre (Steve), Jamie Coyner (Cierra), and Jesse Coyner (Cathy); even more grateful was he for great-granddaughters, Anna Coyner and Renee Coyner; and his sister, Betty Ann Hughes, who was his blessing from the moment she was born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lewis.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the University of Virginia Hospital, Di. Dianne Barros, Dr. Andrew Barros, and the late Dr. John Novak.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2022, at Fleetwood Harmony Masonic Lodge in Lovingston with Masonic Rites. Pastor Bill Meneeley will be officiating. The family requests that masks be worn if you attend the service.

Nelson County has lost a wonderful man who did so much for the county and community. Although Ted is no longer with us, the wonderful memories we all have of Ted will remain with us forever. I remember Ted for all he did of Square Dancing in general being a Charter Member of the Blue Ridge Stars Square Dance Club of Amherst. Being the first Caller for the Blue Ridge Stars, Ted made sure the Caller was appreciated. Rest In Peace.

I am very sorry to hear of Ted's passing. To Jane and the family, although Ted is no longer with us, the wonderful memories we all have of Ted will never be forgotten. Ted, as a Charter Member of The Blue Ridge Stars Square Dance Club, will always be remembered by me as making sure the first Caller (me) for the Club was appreciated. Thanks Ted R.I.P.

We are so sorry for your loss as well as our communities loss. Ted was a gentle giant in all his endeavors. Everything was important to him on both sides of the river--Nelson County and Amherst County.

Ted was one of the most incredible minds I have ever met. A natural affinity for engineering combined with an ability to cut through the complications to the heart of a problem. He was a good friend to me in a very transitional time of my life. My heartfelt condolences to Jane and all of the family.

I´m deeply saddened by Ted´s passing; he was a talented and charitable person. Den and I were also part of the formation of the square dance club, Blue Ridge Stars in Amherst, VA. While Den and I were only dating, and haven´t announced any wedding plans, he told us he would provide the horse and carriage for our wedding ceremony. And, that he did! We were forever grateful for this gift. Jane, you are in our prayers. Much Love!

My father, Lem Hughes, and Ted were wonderful friends and I spent many a Sunday afternoon enjoying the stories the two of them liked to tell. Heaven has become a little more blessed to have those two together again sharing their stories to a new and larger congregation of souls while those of us left behind shall miss them terribly.

Ted and Jane were avid square dancers and worked on many VASARDA committees and various clubs. They were original members and helped to form the Blue Ridge Stars square dance club in Amherst, VA. I believe that Ted did the restoration work on most of the pieces at the Carriage Museum, Blackstone, VA. Ted was a man of many talents and I feel honored to have been his friend and Jane's. My sincere sympathy to Jane and all their family and friends. Ted's passing is a loss to his family and the whole community. My sincere Sympathy. Prayers for strength and comfort.

Jane and Betty Ann, visiting Ted and having him visit me was such a joy! The family pictures he provided are treasures for sure. Ted was a wealth of knowledge! Part of his legacy remains in the restoration of Granddaddy's caboose...what joy and memories it brought my mom! My love to you all!
