Arlene Powell Obituary
Arlene was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and a retired employee of A.R.A. Food Service. She loved spending time with her family. She is survived by two sons, Tony Roger Powell, of New Orleans, LA and Phillip Gary Powell and his wife, Lisa, of Madison Heights; one daughter, Shelby P. Frank and her husband, Thomas, of Rustburg; two sisters, Clarice S. Mayhew, of Pensacola, FL and Audrey S. Henshaw and her husband, Walter, of Powhatan; seven grand- children, Cindy Davis and her husband, Bryan, Stephanie Mawyer and her husband, Shane, Judy Davidson, William Edward Powell, Phillip Gary Powell, Jr., Joshua E. Powell and Jeri Dawkins and her husband, Sebastian; nine great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 16, 2012, at Spring Hill Cemetery with Pastor Carlton Duck, officiating. A reception will be held at the Gethsemane Baptist Church, 411 Blue Ridge St., Lynchburg, VA 24501, after the service. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at her residence, 247 Hackberry Rd., Rustburg.

Nanny,it has been almost a month since you left. I know you are enjoying your new home. Just wish I could see you with no struggles. I know you are perfect in heaven, and honestly that really makes me happy! I am just selfish when it comes to you, I miss you so much & would do anything to have you back here with me. Although, I feel your presence, I long to see you, kiss you, hold you & just to hear your voice. Life is really hard with out you. I know I have people here that love me & care for me. But no ones love compares to you. Like I have said many times there isn't a day that will pass by that I do not think of you. I have caught myself dialing your number to only realize you aren't going to answer. Oh boy does that reality hurt so much. God knows my heart, and he knows how I love you so, and miss you beyond words. I will always cherish our memories, I am so thankful I have them tuck in that safe place in my heart. I am thankful that I took the time to make memories that I will have forever. I find myself talking a lot about you & Papa :) I know you know that cause you are here with me, I have to tell you that the pleasant scent of Roses that I am smelling is comforting to know you are here....And I know & feel that you are, as Roses was one of your favorite flowers... Nanny, it snowed today & still is at 11:27pm! I remember how we loved talking about the snow. I normally would be over excited with joy because of the snow. It just isn't the same not being able to share it with you.I miss you so much, everyone tells me I will get through in time. I am not convinced of this as everyday that goes by it seems it is harder & harder. I love you, and wish you could be back here with me (cancer free of course)Your love has filled my heart & I am thankful for that. I know I have people in my life that care for & love me, but I really feel like life stinks without you....I am trying to keep a smile on my face & my chin up, but it is so hard when I am broken..My heart aches for you.....I will NEVER forget you!I love you always & forever.

I miss you so much.I am so use to talking to you several times a day and now I cant. I thank you and for being my mommie and so proud to have had the parents that God blessed me with.I just dont know how to go on without you I know you will show me the way.My heart is so broken and I feel so empty. I will not say Good bye just see ya because we will meet again. The day that I see Jesus and in your arms again what a wonderful place to be. Mommie you would have been so proud of our church how they came together in our need. Pastor Duck did a wonderful service in your honor. I love you so much and to know you are holding my baby in your arms is great comfort. Please help Cindy and between you and Jesus give her the strength. I love you forever.

I remember the last time I saw you. It wasn't that long ago. I was going to come see you this week and am very saddened that I won't get to see you. You will always be in my heart. I love you! Phil, Shelby and Tony, I'm so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful woman who will be greatly missed. One great thing is that Shea in heaven with her sweetheart, Lewis now. Oh my sweet Nanny, what do I say... I miss you so much there is a hole in my heart that will never be filled.
