Elizabeth McCormick "Liz" Garrett

1934 - 2023

Elizabeth "Liz" McCormick Garrett, 89 of Lynchburg, widow of James T. Garrett, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023.

She was born in Appomattox County on February 22, 1934, daughter of the late Lewis and Eva McCormick. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Lewis "Pete" McCormick, Ervin McCormick, Edward McCormick, Leonard McCormick and Wallace McCormick and a sister, Frances Mays.

Liz was a member of Fairview Christian Church. She retired from Courtland Manufacturing Company and later worked part time at Belk.

She loved her family and she enjoyed cooking for them on Sundays almost as much as they enjoyed eating her great food.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, James "Jim" T. Garrett, Jr. (Tammy), Joyce G. Sawyer, and Jerald W. Garrett (Vicki); a sister, Margaret McCormick; five grandchildren, Ernie Sawyer, III (Amy), Eric Sawyer (Leah), J.W. Garrett (Rebecca), Jennifer Hankins (Chase) and Latisha Nadelman (Cary). She is also survived by two special great grandchildren, Garrett Sawyer and Emilia Sawyer as well as Ernie Sawyer, Jr. (Donna), father of Ernie III and Eric.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2023 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel where a Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
