Leonard Zarko Obituary

WILBURTON — Leonard S. Zarko, 87, of 212 Greco Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at his residence.

Born in Mount Carmel on April 4, 1921, he was a son of the late Zigmund and Mary (Zdancewicz) Zarko.

He attended Conyngham Township schools.

He was in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He served with the 50th Troop Carrier Squadron from May 1942 to February 1946. He served in Africa, Sicily, England and France. He earned the following medals: European and African Campaign Medals, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Diplome from the French government. He is an honored World War II veteran.

On Oct. 6, 1945, in England, he married the former Marjorie Ardin, who survives.

He worked as a mechanic and truck driver until retirement.

Leonard was a proud member of the Centralia American Legion Post 608 where he served in the honor guard. He also belonged to the Wilburton Hose Company and the Centralia-Wilburton Senior Citizens. He loved to go hunting and fishing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard Jr. and Charlene Zarko, of Wilburton, David and Becky Zarko, of Winslow, Maine and Paul and Christine Zarko, of Wilburton; two grandchildren, Mike Zarko, of Wisconsin, and Lynette Ballinger, of Mount Carmel; two sisters, Mary Beal ,of Bridgeport, Conn., and Pearl Jurubala, of Scranton; and many nieces and nephews, whom he was close to.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ziggy, John and Edward Zarko, and a sister, Helen Lott.

ZARKO — Leonard S. Zarko, 87, of 212 Greco Lane, Wilburton. Religious services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph J. Stutz Inc. Funeral Home, 40 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz III, supervisor with the Rev. Rose Marquardt officiating. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park in Stonington. Viewing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday in the funeral home.

Marge, my love goes to you, I am so sorry to hear Lenny has passed away, but know he is now without further pain. I have lots of fond memories of Lenny, especially of our family trip to England. You will be thought of with great Love.
