Our beautiful Mackenzie Alexis Gray, 26, left our lives early Sunday morning, February 5, 2017.
Mackenzie was born on April 20, 1990 at King's Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Virginia. She is the cherished daughter of Shannon Gray and Kirk Gray of Staunton. Mackenzie leaves behind the two loves of her life, a daughter, Nahla Gray, and son, Jasiah Davis. She was a devoted mother who worked and lived for her two children. They were her world.
Mackenzie graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 2008 where she was a basketball stand-out, and graduated in 2015 from Piedmont Community College with a degree in nursing. She was employed as a nurse at Envoy of Staunton Nursing Home. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, and had a love and zest for life. Mackenzie's radiant smile and personality, her authenticity and sense of humor, drew people to her and lit up whatever world she stepped into.
Mackenzie was preceded in death by her adoring grandmother, Linda Gray; great grandmothers, Joyce Pendleton and Beulah "Nan" Ervin; great-grandfather Samuel Ervin. She has left behind many loved ones whose lives are better because she lived. These include her sisters, Jalyn Gray; Kaleah "Lele" Johnson; and Brooklyn Gray; stepfather, Harold Wells; grandmother, Alice Patler; aunts, Lynette Slaughter (Gray) and Adika Privott; uncles, Nicholas Patler and Mark Patler; great grandfather, Landon Pendleton Jr.; great aunt and uncle, Laten and Charles Bechtel; great aunts, Sandra Wayland and Brenda Crawford; great uncles, Edward Gray, William Gray, Theodore Gray, Jerry Ervin, Samuel Ervin Jr. and Steven Ervin; special friends, Terry "Buck" Davis and Andrew "Rex" Chapman; and many, many cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, February 10, 2017 in the Henry Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Thornrose Cemetery.

Shannon and Kirk, I've known Mackenzie since we were little from our made up girl groups to shopping trips she was always ready for an adventure . She loved life and enjoyed every minute of it. The Mackenzie I remember loved basketball and knew she would make an impact in the world. Then she had those beautiful babies and found her calling was being the best mom she could possibly be. My heart is heavy for her children but I hope they remember there mom as a hero and know she was loved. For all her family and friends that are in pain right now remember her smile and know god had a plan for her. One we will never understand but she will always be with you. Rest In Peace Mackenzie!

I enjoyed working with Mackenzie for several years on A2 at Western State and am blessed to have known her. She was so full of the joy of life. I didn't know McKenzie directly-only through her Uncle Nick who loves her dearly. I loved hearing his stories of his family and what they were up to and who they are to him. He was so proud of McKenzie and loved her two kids as well.

Shannon, I had a chance to work with Mackenzie several yrs ago on A2. She only had her daughter at that time, but I remember how proud she was to be a Mom. We shared stories about our girls. She is a beautiful person and though we may never understand why, I pray that God gives you a peace that passes the why. They grew up in school together and recently went to a concert to see Kevin gates together. At the concert they took a picture together and I couldn't help but think how much they resemble each other. Could pass for sisters even.
