Albert Luther Ellis, III passed away February 27, 2013 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born February 12, 1946 in Raleigh to Albert and Marion Ellis.
Al graduated in 1963 from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh. He earned a B.A. in Political Science and an M.P.H. in Public Health Finance and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Al served in the U.S. Army Reserve 82nd Airborne Division. He also served as Assistant Director of the Wake County Health Department and later opened his own small real estate business in Raleigh. In 1981, Al received a full scholarship and fellowship from Rice University in Houston, Texas. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Rice and enjoyed a long career as a college professor including positions with the Texas A&M University system and Del Mar College. Al also filled an interim appointment with the NC Department of State Treasurer and was chief financial officer of a private home health agency.
Al is survived by his wife of 36 years, Helen; daughter, Emery MacFarlane (Jason) of Pearland, Texas; son, Albert "Scotty" Luther Ellis, IV of Houston, Texas; brother, Curtis Ellis (Beth) and children Christian, Brian, and Blair of Raleigh; and numerous other loving family members across the country.
Al was passionate about politics, an avid reader, a published author, and a major sports fan. First and foremost an educator, Al adored his students and loved teaching. He will continue to teach through donating his body to the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Family, friends, colleagues, and students alike will deeply miss Al.
Al's life will be celebrated at Seaside Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Corpus Christi, Texas on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 5 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Raleigh at a later date.
