Raleigh, North Carolina - Koren Elisabeth Harrison (nee Hicks) died peacefully, surrounded by her family on October 12th. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Gilbert and Barbara Hicks, George and Eva Goodson, by her brother Peter Hicks, and special Aunt Ruth Goodson. She is survived by her parents, Gil and Peggy Hicks of New Bern, NC, by her children Katherine, Peter, Eliot, Dylan and Sam, by Craig Clark her life partner and her brother Andrew Hicks, all of Raleigh as well as her uncle and aunt, Peter and Sally Goodson of Lake Wylie SC, uncle and aunt, John and Dawn Hicks of Hilton NY, uncle Will Hicks of Albuquerque, NM, nephew Adam Hicks and niece Anna Hicks in addition to numerous cousins across the country.
Koren was born in Geneva, New York in 1971 and lived in Florence SC and Atlanta GA. before moving to Raleigh in 1986. She graduated from Enloe High School, attended Oberlin College in Oberlin OH. and graduated with a Music Education degree from East Carolina University. While most of her life she resided in Raleigh she, her elder children and first husband Stephen Harrison lived in Guangzhou China and London England while he was in the diplomatic corps. In her professional life Koren was a teaching assistant at Poe Elementary School in the 1990s. She then served 16 years in Wake County Social Services. Her last position was Director of Economic Benefits and Assistance Division at Wake County Social Services.
In her private life Koren was an avid sports fan, supporting NC State, the Atlanta Braves, Carolina Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Georgia Bulldogs. She enjoyed camping and small gatherings with family and friends. A lifelong reader, she also had an outstanding singing voice and was selected to the All State High School Choruses in both Georgia and North Carolina in the mid-1980s.
If one was asked what was most special about Koren, her family, friends, coworkers and acquaintances, all their answers would be her kindness. She will be missed by many, but her example of living and her kindness will continue to be a standard for us all.
The family will be receiving friends and coworkers on Monday, October 17th from 6-8 PM at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 E. Millbrook Rd, Raleigh. A funeral service honoring Korie's life will be held on Tuesday October 18th at 11 AM. This service will be held at the Church of the Nativity at 8849 Ray Rd, Raleigh.
