Dammeron Valley, Utah On Monday, August 21, 2023, we held your hand, kissed your face and comforted you, while you slipped away. That day you left this earth and our lives. It brought to an end a remarkable, fulfilling and accomplished life. Loraine died at the age of 84 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. No one lived so beautifully, courageously and gracefully as you did.
Loraine's life was defined by love, kindness and care which she showered upon all who she crossed paths with. She had a profound impact in the lives of people who were privileged enough to be touched by her. She was self-sacrificing, generous, honest, compassionate and had an awareness of the human spirit in all endeavors. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, husband and close friends were all influenced by her.
Loraine began her life in 1939 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She was born to Russell and Lena Churchill. Loraine's father was a master electrician and the family moved from job to job. One of those jobs took the family to Southern Ohio where her father was to begin work on the Atomic Plant in 1954. It was there that she met and married her beloved, John I Burns. John was the son of Aldena Deering and stepson to Robert Deering of Elm Grove, Ohio. They set off with excitement on their grand adventure which they enjoyed together through 67 years of marriage. When Loraine packed her bag to go to Germany after my father joined the military, it was not filled with things you think a young girl would bring, but instead it was filled with silverware, place settings and a pot. Loraine was practical!
After our father's time in the military was finished, John and Loraine moved back to southern Ohio. By this time, they had a son, John Daniel, who was later joined by a sister, Janet and brother James. Loraine remained very close to her children and was a devoted Mom to them.
Loraine started her professional life in banking, beginning as a teller, then moving up to the Trust Department while living in Cleveland Ohio. After she moved to Arizona, she continued in banking with her career culminating with being offered the position of bank manager. It was then she decided she wanted to give real estate a try. She successfully became a real estate agent, a broker and then owner of Burns Realty which became a very thriving business in Rio Rico, Arizona. Loraine recently commented to me that being a realtor was the happiest time in her professional life.
Later John and Loraine retired and built their dream house on 5 acres in Southern Utah and happily lived there for 20 years. They spent time with their extended family as well as enjoyed hiking, four wheeling, RV-ing, square dancing and planting trees, 55 trees at last count. Loraine cared for her mother Lena for many years as well.
Loraine was a kind and giving soul. She was always there for family and friends and ready to lend a hand, provide a kind work and make a tasty meal.
She was predeceased by her husband John Burns about a year and seven months ago from complications of surgery. May they rest in peace together. Dad always said he couldn't sleep a wink without her by his side, so Dad, Mom is coming to you. I know you'll take care of her.
When we pulled out of my parent's home after Mom's passing my husband said, "Look at the sky. There is a heart shaped cloud." My husband was a pilot for over 50 years and he had never seen a cloud that was perfectly shaped like a heart before. We'd like to think Mom and Dad were giving us a sign that all was well and that they were together and sending their love. Though they are no longer with us, we are grateful for a lifetime of wonderful memories with them.
Loraine is survived by her children John Daniel, Janet Sundell (Charles), James (Patricia), brother Charles Churchill (Nancy), six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Loraine also has surviving family in Southern Ohio. Loraine was the Sister-in-law to Randy and Susan Deering as well as aunt to their children, Robert and Sarah. She has many other extended relatives in southern Ohio.
