Elizabeth McKeen Obituary

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Lupacchino McKeen, age 87, passed away at St. Charles/Unity Nursing and Rehab Center in New Orleans, LA on May 6, 2016. Born in Manchester CT on July 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Angela Maria (Pontillo) Lupacchino. She was the wife of Kenneth A. McKeen who predeceased her in 1993. Elizabeth was a graduate of St. James School and a 1946 graduate of Manchester High School where she was on the volley ball team and an avid duckpin bowler. In her teens she worked at McLellan Variety Store at 974 Main Street managing the confectionery counter, and was an usherette and worked the concession counter at The Circle Theater at 16 Oak Street. She was later employed as a long distance operator at the switching center of The Southern New England Telephone Company (SNETCO) at 52 East Center Street in Manchester CT. She is a veteran of the United States Air Force where she served as a communications operator. She and her husband Kenneth traveled extensively in Hollywood FL and Pasadena CA before settling in New Orleans LA. She was a resident of St. Charles/Unity Nursing and Rehab Center in New Orleans for the past 20 years. While in New Orleans, she survived two devastating hurricanes, Katrina on August 29, 2005 and Gustav on September 1, 2008. During both hurricanes she and her fellow residents were safely evacuated to Lakewood Quarters Nursing and Rehab Center, a sister facility in Baton Rouge LA. They returned to New Orleans when it was determined safe to do so. Her former residence on Chef Menteur Highway, which she shared with her husband Kenneth, was completely destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by two brothers, Clement L. Lupacchino, John J. Lupacchino, a sister Philomena Kaszowski, a half-brother Joseph J. Lubeck and three half-sisters Frances Balch, Mary Kearns and Philomena Lupacchino. She is survived by her younger brother and only living sibling, Anthony Daniel Lupacchino and his wife Joan of Meriden CT, along with several nieces and nephews. Providing guidance and coordinating with doctors and staff of St. Charles/Unity Nursing and Rehab Center, her needs and affairs were handled by her brother Anthony Daniel Lupacchino. Not having any close family members in New Orleans, she looked forward with happiness and joy to the annual visits by her brother, her nephew and godchild Anthony Thomas Lupacchino of Rocky Hill CT. Special thanks to Canon Hospice, St. Charles/Unity Nursing and Rehab Center, Touro Hospital and the doctors, nurses, aides, social workers and chaplains, who took care of Elizabeth's needs while under their care. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016 at St. Paul The Apostle Church, 6828 Chef Menteur Highway, New Orleans, LA beginning at 10:00 AM with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial with military honors and alongside her husband will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery, 10400 Old Gentilly Road, New Orleans, LA. ALL SOULS DAY MASS - November 2, 2016 - St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, New Orleans LA

My First Christmas in Heaven

I see the countless Christmas trees
Around the world below
With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars,
Reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular,
Please wipe away the tear
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs
That people hold so dear
But the sounds of music can't compare
With the Christmas choir up here.
I have no words to tell you,
The joy their voices bring.
For it is far beyond description,
To hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me,
I see the pain inside your heart.
But I am not so far away,
We really aren't apart.
So be happy for me, dear ones,
You know I hold you dear.
And be glad I'm spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I sent you each a special gift,
From my heavenly home above.
I sent you each a memory
Of my undying love.
After all, love is a gift more precious
Than pure gold.
Was always most important
The stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other,
My father said to do.
I can't count the blessing or love
Has for each of you.
So have a Merry Christmas and
Wipe away that tear
Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

It's been a long and difficult week here in New Orleans finalizing your arrangements and saying goodbye.

Everyone at your services yesterday were kind and gracious, especially the funeral home staff, members of St. Paul's, UNITY Health & Rehab, the delegation of Louisiana Women Veterans and the Air Force Honor Guard at the cemetery.

I will always remember you and the times you let me in The Circle Theater for free to see the movies and give me popcorn. And, the times you brought home for me comic books and Suchard Swiss Chocolate bars.

You were always so happy to see both A-A and me when we would make our annual visit to New Orleans to see you.

I will always remember you and my other big sister Phil, who both took care of their 'little brother'. I miss you both.

Your Brother "Danny".

On behalf of Louisiana Women Veterans, we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of Elizabeth Ann Mckeen, U.S. Air Force veteran. Here is a poem that we honor our ladies of military with at their passing:

She is a woman veteran
Whose service was true
She proudly served
The Red, White and Blue

She gave a part of her life
So others could be free
And without any hesitation
She joined unselfishly

She did her job well
With Honor and Pride
And served her great country
With the men alongside

We're proud today to know
That although she is gone
She goes on to glory
After a job "well done!"

And so, "Our Dear Sister"
We salute you today,
A special Airman laid to rest
In this quiet, solemn way.
