Katherine Fayard Obituary
Katherine Ruby Abels Fayard died peacefully on July 1, 2002 at 6:23 p.m. She was born October 23, 1912. She was a lifelong resident and native of Springfield, Louisiana. She was a retired social studies teacher focusing on American History, having given thirty-five years to the educational system of Livingston Parish and in particular will be remembered for her outstanding volunteer work as a 4-H Leader at Springfield High School. Through her efforts and guidance the Springfield Senior 4-H Club won many parish, district and state awards. Her father, Alexander Richard Abels, was the son of Henry Abels whose father, Dietrich, immigrated to America in 1811, fought the Mexican War and thereafter opened a clothing store in New Orleans before moving to a farm near Ponchatoula. She was a graduate of Springfield High School and Southeastern Louisiana College. She was a member of Springfield Methodist Church. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association of Louisiana. She is survived by her only child, Calvin C. Fayard, Jr., Denham Springs, LA, and three grandchildren, Chalyn Cynthia Fayard, Denham Springs, LA, Cathryn Caroline Fayard, New York, N.Y., and Calvin C. Fayard, III (Trey), Charleston, S.C., former daughter-in-law Cynthia Felder Fayard, Jackson, WY, brothers Charles A. ""Bubbie'' Abels of Baton Rouge and Springfield, LA, Harold Abels of Springfield, LA and sister Lillian Ables Maurin, Hammond, LA., numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Calvin C. Fayard, Sr., her father Alexander Richard Abels, and mother Rubye Pusey Abels; brothers Alexander Richard Abels, Jr., Wilson Abels, Raymond Abels, Jacob Abels, Edward Abels, Ralph Abels and one sister Helen Abels Easterly. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Maurin, Bob Maurin, Charles Abels, Jr., Charles Martin, Brian Abels and Douglas Behrman. Honorary pallbearers are Calvin C. ""Trey'' Fayard, III and Clark Forrest, Jr. Visitation Wednesday, July 3, 2002 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with religious services immediately thereafter conducted by Rev. E.A. Guy and Rev. Bill Foster at the Springfield First United Methodist Church, Springfield, LA. Entombment at the Springfield Cemetery. HARRY McKNEELY & SON FUNERAL HOME in Ponchatoula in charge of arrangements.
