He graduated from Neola High School in 1951. Arlen served in the army for two years during the Korean War. He married Joyce Eileen Holzfaster on June 2, 1956. Arlen is survived by his three sons, David (Leisa) of Murfreesboro, TN, Douglas of Alvo, NE, and Duane (Paulette) of Council Bluffs, IA. Also, he leaves nine grandchildren (Tara, Kyle, Alex, April, Amy, Casie, Missy, Becky, Heidi) and thirteen great-grandchildren (Ella, Kinley, Lyla, Jacob, Enis, Esra, Riley, Charley ,Tinley, Lane, Logan, Layton, Colton ). Arlen is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Eileen Barrier, his sister Mildred Schutte, his brother Darrell Barrier, a great granddaughter Lucy Clevenger, and his parents Ivan and Thelma Barrier. Arlen, his brother, and his father operated their business, Barrier Tire Company, in Neola, Iowa, for many years. After leaving Neola, Arlen worked for NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) for the rest of his career. He loved politics, so this was a perfect fit for his outgoing personality. Arlen also loved to umpire baseball. He was recognized for his accomplishments on the field by the local Tennessee Baseball Association. Grandpa also loved to play UNO with his grandkids and great grandkids. He loved to try and pull one over on them in a clever and joking way. Arlen will be remembered as a loving, generous, family man and a devoted Christian. There will be a graveside service in Neola, Iowa at a date yet to be determined.
