Guy Austin Baker

Guy Austin Baker, 96, a longtime resident of Mt. Jackson, VA, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024, at Shenandoah Place in New Market.

He was born on January 15, 1928, in Conicville, VA, son of the late David William and Lizzie Ellen Lindamood Baker. He grew up in Conicville along with his 2 brothers and a sister. On August 9, 1958, in Orkney Springs, he married the former Irene "Shirley" Funkhouser who proceeded in death on August 4, 2015.

Guy graduated from Triplett High School in 1946. He worked at Bushe's Esso Service Station in Mt. Jackson as a mechanic for over 20 years. He received numerous awards from Esso, including All American Salesman in 1957 & Top Motor Oil Salesman in 1956. Guy retired from the Virginia ABC Store in Mt. Jackson as manager after 30 years. Guy worked with his brother and nephew at Baker Farms, Inc. upon retiring.

Guy was a devoted husband, brother, and uncle. He was a respectful gentleman who valued hard work, responsibility, & family. "Uncle" Guy's life was an amazing example of what each of us should strive for -- kind, loving, hardworking, and a child of God. Guy and Shirley enjoyed visiting family and friends, gardening, travelling and genealogy.

Guy was the last surviving member of his family. He was preceded in death by Preston Elwood Baker, Mildred Mae Baker Bowman and Ray Moorman Baker.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Dot Baker of Woodstock and numerous relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank Shenandoah Place and Gentiva Hospice for their kind and gentle care.

Family night will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Dellinger Funeral Homes in Mt. Jackson from 6-8 P.M. A Graveside Service will at Mt. Jackson Cemetery on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at 10:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Jackson Fire & Rescue Department, PO Box 251, Mt. Jackson, VA 22842.
