George Dewrell Obituary

Prominent, local defense attorney, George I. Dewrell, Sr. - dynamite defense attorney, giant-slayer, and all around nice guy - passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019, from complications of diabetes. He passed into Jesus' loving arms at his home in Baker surrounded by his family.

George was the fifth son of George Ladue and Mildred Adams Dewrell. He was a true Fort Walton Beach native. His mother delivered him in Florala, Alabama, on February 10, 1951, only because there was no hospital in Fort Walton Beach. He was then brought back to the family home on Brooks Street where he grew and prospered along with Fort Walton Beach. He graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in 1969. He held a B.A. from Mobile College and a doctorate of jurisprudence from Mississippi College School of Law.

George practiced law in Okaloosa County for more than 30 years. He zealously represented tens of thousands of clients through his career, regardless of their ability to pay. George enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, boating, cruising, enjoying nature, and Friday night poker with the boys; but his favorite thing was spending time with his wife. He had a tremendous sense of humor to which all of his friends can attest. George loved the Lord and was a generous man who helped many throughout his life.

George was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved brother Frank Dewrell. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Donna Dewrell; children: Tracey Dewrell and wife Mara, Amy Dewrell, Travis Dewrell and wife Jessica and George I. Dewrell, Jr.; 8 grandchildren: Ashley Matthews, Alexis, Audrey, Austin, Carli, Madison, Allen and Anna Dewrell; Brothers: Don Dewrell (Carol), Ray Dewrell (Ann), and Tom Dewrell (Cathy); Sister-in-law, Joyce Lee of Shalimar; Brother-in-law, George Maxey of Birmingham, AL, his favorite cousin Billy Dewrell, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Visitation with the family will begin at 2:00 p.m. on October 3, 2019 at Cinco Baptist Church with a memorial service beginning at 4:00 p.m. A reception with the family will follow in the fellowship hall. Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview. Guest book and condolences are available online at www.whitehurstpowellfuneralhome.com.
