LEWIS

John L.

John L. Lewis, age 86, of Toledo, died March 10, 2014, at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born July 23, 1927, in Toledo to the late Thomas Lyman and Marie (Tody) Lewis and married Doris Mae Goodman on August 18, 1949.

John was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and the University of Toledo, earning a Bachelor's degree in Engineering. He was employed as a civil engineer with Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company for more than 40 years. A World War II veteran of the US Army, he also taught weaponry at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY.

John was an active member of Collingwood United Methodist Church in Toledo, serving as an usher for many years. He was a genuinely generous and caring man who loved to give himself away to others. He will be fondly remembered for his trips to the Erie Street Market to make change for vendors and for his morning visits to share doughnuts at Bob's Service Station at Upton and Berdan. John also enjoyed following the progress of Toledo-area construction projects, often bearing gifts for the workers.

John is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris; children, Vicki (Rickey) Horn, Tommy (Kim) Lewis and Deborah Lewis; granddaughters, Stacy, Stephanie and Madison; great-grandchildren, Sierra and Hunter, and great-great-grandchild, Bentley. He was preceded in death by his step-father, William "Brownie" Brown; brother, George Lewis; sisters, Mable Gray, Jeanne Smith and Phyllis Elberg, and stepbrothers, William "Smokie", Elwood "Woody", and Howard Brown.

Memorial services to celebrate John's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 17, 2014, at Collingwood United Methodist Church, 701 Phillips Ave., Toledo, OH 43612. The Rev. Mary Sullivan will preside. Light refreshments and a gathering of family and friends will immediately follow in the church hall.

The family requests that those wishing to make memorial contributions please consider Collingwood United Methodist Church.
