NICK KOWALISYN ST. JOHN, IN FORMERLY OF GRIFFITH, IN
Nick Kowalisyn, age 79, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at home surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in Hammond, IN. Nick is survived by his wife, Donna (Stivers) Kowalisyn; daughters: Nanette (Gary) Raduenz of Dyer, Diane Kowalisyn of Griffith, and Pamela Kowalisyn of Richmond, IN; one son, Nicholas (Michelle) Kowalisyn of Crown Point; three grandchildren: Shawna (Keith) Coleman, Michael Raduenz, and Alex Kowalisyn; great-granddaughter, Lillian Nichole Coleman; sisters-in- law: Shirle Kowalisyn of Hammond and Marge Kowalisyn of Munste; brother-in-law, Robert Zimmerman of Colon, MI; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his parents: Eva and Nicholi Kowalyszyn; brothers: William (an infant), John Kowalisyn, Andrew Kowalisyn, William Kowalisyn, and Alex Kowalisyn; and sisters: Mary (Willard) Fry, Anne Nelson, and Eve (Robert) Zimmerman. Nick graduated from Hammond High School in 1950. He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN and graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1954. Before graduating, he married the love of his life, Donna, in 1953. They have never been apart since that time. Nick served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957, stationed in San Antonio, TX. He returned to the region and worked as a pharmacist in retail at Jackson's Pharmacy in Cedar Lake and Shakula's Pharmacy in Griffith. Nick retired in 1994 after working in the pharmacy department at St. Catherine's Hospital for 24 years. He and Donna enjoyed 15 wonderful years of retirement in Barefoot Bay, FL. They returned to the region in 2009. Nick was an artist and a visionary. He drew, painted, and made sculptures throughout his lifetime. He was a carpenter who could build anything out of wood or any other material he might have had on hand. He was an author and a poet. Nick was a great singer and storyteller. But most of all, he was a man who deeply loved his wife and his children. He has left a legacy of love, art, and memories we will never forget. Burial will be at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. I wish I would of met Nick earlier in my life! But at least I met him and wife Donna. He raised 4 marvelous children. Nan, Nick,Pam and Mi Di!! I know my dad would of appreciated him for all he did with his children and the love he felt for them! Love is something that just happens, It can't be bought it can't be sold. Rest in peace Nick and save a place for me!!
