NICK NEAGU LAKE STATION, IN

Nick Neagu, age 88, of Lake Station, IN was born August 22, 1923 and passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in Valparaiso, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty (Heater) Neagu; parents: John and Victoria Neagu; and brother, John (Katie) Neagu. Nick is survived by his daughters: Nikki Darlene Neagu of Papillion, NE, Karren (Patrick) Lee of Gary, Joyce Neagu (Bob) Rodriquez of Avondale, AZ, and Melody Neagu (Rick Pajor) of Gary, IN; brother, George V. (Jeanette) Neagu of Michigan City, IN; grandchildren: Patrick, David, Christopher, Michele, Jeremy, Amy, Jason, Nick, and Hannah; 14 great grandchildren; loving nieces and nephews; and companion, Dolly Carbonara and her daughter, Andrea. Nick was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy where he won five battle stars and several campaign ribbons. He was a champion boxer winning many titles including the Heavy Weight Champion of the 1944 Olympic Games held on the USS LST 471. Of all his many honors he was most proud of being voted Pin Up Boy of the Navy by the Louisiana Waves in 1943. He was a member of the American Legion Post #430 and VFW Post #9323. Nick retired from Inland Steel in 1980, where he worked as a Shipping and Receiving Supervisor. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage, IN. Military honors will follow the memorial service. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. Cremation will be performed by Heritage Crematory, Portage, IN.
