Adolph Koeppel Obituary

KOEPPEL--Adolph, 85, attorney and founder of the law firm, Koeppel, Sommer, Martone, Leistman, a pioneer in the real estate tax certiorari and condemnation law passed away on March 14, 2009. Koeppel received his LLB from NYU Law School in 1948, and his LLM from NYU in 1953. He ran for Town Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead in 1953. He was former assistant Nassau County Attorney from 1963 - 1967, and former Village Attorney of the town of Lake Success from 1968 - 1977. He served in the Navy during World War II and received a medal for his service on D-day and also served at Okinawa and the Philipines on the Destroyer USS Barton. He was a known fiscal philatelist who wrote several books including The Stamps that Caused The American Revolution in 1976, and The Stamps of the Princely States of India for which he received the Earl of Crawford Award by the Royal Philatelic Society. Koeppel was a great humanitarian and patron of the arts. He was one of the early sponsors of the opera night at the Tilles Center at C.W Post College. He supported many charities including The National Children's Defense Fund and the Southern Poverty Law Center. He was born on April 11, 1923. He was a great amateur golfer, and an avid reader. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rhoda Koeppel, his daughters Lesley Hirsch, Pamela Koeppel, his granddaughters Melissa Grubb, Jennifer Parham, Tara Robinson, his great-grandsons Parker Doyle, and Etienne Parham, his son-in-law Michael Hirsch, and his grandson-in-law Steven Parham, and Kenny Doyle, his great-grandson's father. He is, also, survived by his younger sister Seena Ostroff, his brothers-in-law Herbert Ostroff and Herbert Rubin, Martine Arnoux, his nieces, nephews, friends, assistant Susan Shapiro and his confidant Richard Reichler. Funeral services will be held at Riverdale Chapel in Great Neck on Wednesday, March 18, at 10am.
