CAROL SCHOEN

SCHOEN--Carol B., daughter of Yetta and Harry Bronston (of Plainfield, NJ) passed peacefully at the age of 96 in her home in NYC on February 8, 2023. Carol was a multi-talented person whose creative energies were expressed in her teaching, poetry, appreciation of music and intellectual pursuits with the Life Long Peer Learning Programs at the New School. Carol received her BA from Radcliffe (1948). In the 1960s she made the then almost unprecedented decision in the mid-1960s to go back to graduate school, earn, a PhD, and then teach at the University level. Her PhD was in English Literature from Columbia University (1968). When the City University moved toward open admissions, despite her classical training in English, she became an enthusiastic supporter of English as a second language and taught everything from introductory college level English to literature. Her publications include books about Anzia Yezierska and Sara Teasdale. She loved to travel and was an exchange professor in the UK and Japan. Carol was an intellectual to be sure, but she loved people, loved parties, and most of all loved her family. Carol is survived by her children Douglas and Sarah (h. Ken) her grandson Joshua and her nieces and nephews Baila, Jan, Debi Ruth Susan Deena Annie David Johnny and Penny. She will have a lasting impact on us all. Our hearts are saddened. She will be missed A private service commemorating her life will take place at graveside with the family.
