CAROL SCHOEN Obituary

SCHOEN--Carol B., daughter of Yetta and Harry Bronston (of Plainfield, NJ) passed peacefully at the age of 96 in her home in NYC on February 8, 2023. Carol was a multi-talented person whose creative energies were expressed in her teaching, poetry, appreciation of music and intellectual pursuits with the Life Long Peer Learning Programs at the New School. Carol received her BA from Radcliffe (1948). In the 1960s she made the then almost unprecedented decision in the mid-1960s to go back to graduate school, earn, a PhD, and then teach at the University level. Her PhD was in English Literature from Columbia University (1968). When the City University moved toward open admissions, despite her classical training in English, she became an enthusiastic supporter of English as a second language and taught everything from introductory college level English to literature. Her publications include books about Anzia Yezierska and Sara Teasdale. She loved to travel and was an exchange professor in the UK and Japan. Carol was an intellectual to be sure, but she loved people, loved parties, and most of all loved her family. Carol is survived by her children Douglas and Sarah (h. Ken) her grandson Joshua and her nieces and nephews Baila, Jan, Debi Ruth Susan Deena Annie David Johnny and Penny. She will have a lasting impact on us all. Our hearts are saddened. She will be missed A private service commemorating her life will take place at graveside with the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the New School Life Long Peer Learning Programs at: lp2nyc.org.

Carol and my mother, Zoe, lived on the same floor and had cocktails together once a week for many years. When I was in NY I joined them. It was always a lively interesting conversation. My condolences.

Carol was so generous with the way she opened her home to our poetry group. She always provided wine, cheese, crackers, and a genuine welcome. She wrote poems which soulfully captured the past, and cycles of poem about the Rosenbergs, about Tompkins Square Park, and her many adventures in this life. I´ll particularly remember her enthusiasm and appreciation for the work of her friends. She was so smart and ebulliently Carol. We´ll miss her so.

Carol was a good and important friend to my mom, Eileen. I was privileged to be invited to her amazing home, and awed by the myriad works of art that adorned it. But her phenomenal intellect was the most impressive thing of all. My sincere condolences to her family and all who loved her. May her memory be a blessing.

I wrote with Carol for years...the Estha group, an amazing group. Often in her lovely apartment. But it was the warmth of Carol above all else. Her enthusiasm and her praise for my poetry was the best. She was my friend. And having a glass of wine with her before the class was the absolute best. Irreplaceable and definitely unforgettable. And totally missed.
