DENISE WERTHEIM Obituary

WERTHEIM--Denise Pauline, passed away after a year long courageous battle with esophageal cancer at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Manhattan on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at age 53. Denise was born in New York City on Independence Day, 1958, the beloved daughter of Jack and Elise Wertheim, who predeceased her. Denise is survived by her father, his wife Jill, sister Alison, brother Mark, Uncle Mickey, niece Sarah and cousin Jason, all of whom gave Denise devoted love and comfort during her final months. After attending Edgemont High School, Scarsdale, Denise graduated from Ithaca College with a BA degree in journalism. She worked in the financial industry for 20 years, ten of them as a trader on Wall Street. September 11, 2001, hit her hard, and after losing close friends she decided to make a change and relocated to Santa Monica, CA. There, she devoted many years to teaching drama, music and dance to teens, touching the lives of many young people and serving on the board of Kids on Stage. Denise was devoted to animals, including her cats Rory and Mysti and Tibetan Terriers, Topaz and Ruby, who were with her during her last days. We will never forget Denise's brave fight against her devastating illness nor the pain she endured. Now that her suffering has ended, may Denise rest in peace. Gifts in her honor can be given to the Los Angeles SPCA at www.spcala.com and the Esophageal Cancer Awareness Association at www.ecaware.org.

In honor of Denise's birthday on Independence Day

The following is Denise's autobiography that she wrote for her recent high school reunion (sent by Alison):

Greetings from sunny Southern California. Here is my life story. After Edgemont I graduated from Ithaca College and then went into the financial industry. I spent the next ten years working on Wall Street as a trader. A chance meeting while on vacation in Mexico led me to move cross country. I relocated to Santa Monica, California. For the next ten years I worked at several different brokerage houses, including Cantor Fitzgerald. September 11th hit me hard. I lost a number of close friends and decided it was time to make a change. Now I alternate between teaching teens drama, music & dance; working as a manager in a children's retail store and helping out a local real estate agent. Three years ago I traded my one bedroom condo for a two bedroom townhouse. I share my space with 2 Tibetan Terriers and 2 cats. In my spare time I enjoy movies, reading and hanging out at home with the dogs.

Rest in peace, Denise. We miss you and will never forget you.

Much love,

Uncle Mickey

Dearest Denise,
I remember you sitting under a tree in Playa Del Rey with me and little Neal. You were always so loving and accepting of Neal's differences. and you always saw his and every other child's gifts.
I remember you at Kids On Stage with all the kids craving to sit on your lap. You are one of the most loving human beings to grace our planet. You are a kid magnet.
I remember singing with you in choir and how you helped me find the alto parts. I feel so blessed to have known you, sang with you in choir, and participated with you at Kids On Stage. Your beautiful spirit will be so missed. I am saddened so by your loss and know that we must all now love more to carry on and fill the void that your absence brings on the planet. Love more to every child, every animal, every person. You are Love. I hear you and see you in each child, dog, cat I see in Santa Monica. You will be truly missed. May your beauty and spirit and blessed memory bring your family peace. I see you and Brandy laughing and running together. May you rest in G-d's love and in peace. In love and gratitude, Elaine, Jeff and Neal

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Denise - thank you for sharing yourself with me that last Friday. I felt your strength and love for your family. Your adoration of animals were parallel passions, as were fellow Edgemont '76 classmates, who held you in community as you held us. You came back to us and we could be home, as you are now. You gave us this extraordinary, enduring gift.

You will be missed dearly Denise. With deepest sympathy for your family and loved ones.

My deep condolences and admiration for the strength of the Wertheim family. Having her loved ones with her, human and animal, must have given her great peace at the end. Thinking of you Alison.

My sincere condolences to the Wertheim family. I didn't know Denise personally, but Alison has been a close friend and mentor for 13 years so I feel as though I did know her sister. My thoughts are with you all.
