DOUGLAS CRAIG Obituary

CRAIG--Douglas Broward, 80, resident of Charlottesville, VA, formerly of Briarcliff Manor, NY died of cancer on November 25, 2009. Mr. Craig was born in New York City, Son of the late Dr. Howard R. Craig, executive director of the New York Academy of Medicine and the late Agnes Broward Craig. He was the grandson of Napolean Bonaparte Broward, Governor of Florida from 1905-1909 for whom Broward County, Florida is named. He was the beloved husband of Joyce Powell Craig, adored father Deborah Soukup, Douglas Craig, Elizabeth Helfman and Robert Craig as well as stepchildren; Douglas Gernert, Catherine Ramsay and ten grandchildren. He graduated from; Trinity School in 1946, from Harvard with an AB in 1950 and a LLB in 1953. He was: an Associate of Debevoise and Plimpton, past President of St. Joe Minerals Corporation, New York President and CEO of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Ltd. Toronto managing partner of Webster and Sheffield, of council Ceccarelli Weprin, PLLC, President and CEO of Craig Consulting Company. He has served on many Boards including Burke Rehab Center, White Plains, NY, member of the Vestry Trinity Church on Wall Street where he served on the Church Scholarship Committee and was President of the Harvard Club of New York City. He also served on the following Boards; The Century Association, Prentice Cup Committee, Past-President and Chairman of the International Lawn Tennis Club of USA and Ethical Resource Center in D.C. He was a past member of the Pleasantville Tennis Club, the Whippoorwill Club and the Sleepy Hollow Country Club. He was currently a Board Member of Farmington Country Club and a member of the Boar's Head Sports Club. He leaves a strong legacy of wise counsel and leadership in the worlds of his professional, volunteer and his family life that will be cherished by all. A memorial service will be held in Charlottesville, VA early next year, the date as yet to be arranged. Memorial contributions may be made to the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care Service, 459 Locust Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22902 or Harvard Club of New York Foundation, "Scholarship Fund", 35 w. 44th St., New York, NY 10036. To the family- I have not met any of you but knew Broward the past three years through tennis. Just wanted you to know that I never met a better guy on the tennis court, an opinion shared I think by all in our group. Very sorry for your loss. Bob Miller

Joyce & family, just wanted you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time of ones life. Broward was a very special person who was always friendly and kind to everyone. His place in Heaven was waiting for him and he should have one of the best spots. Please know I'm available when you need someone to talk with. Love & Hugs, Brenda Langdon
