FRANCIS BURKE Obituary

BURKE--Francis.

Francis Dewey Burke, 93, died on December 5, 2017 at his home in Pennsylvania. Born September 9, 1924 in New York City Frank was the second of three children born to Henry and Catherine Burke. In 1942 while working at Macys Herald Square he met Marian Brady. He served in WWII and survived being a Prisoner of War in the infamous Stalag 17. After the war he joined the New York City Police Department where he rose up the ranks during his 30 year tenure pursued a degree in criminal justice from John Jay College and retired as an Inspector. In October 1948 he married Marian and they went on to have four children. In 1976 he became the VP of Security at The New York Bank for Savings where he remained until 1989. Frank and Marian had a second home in Point Lookout, NY a community he treasured. After 90 years as a proud New Yorker he moved with Marian and Chris to Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square, PA in 2015. He will be remembered for too many qualities and habits to list. Put simply he was beloved by all. Frank was predeceased by his brothers Henry and John and his halfsister Mary. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Marian, his two daughters Ellen and Anne, both of Alexandria, VA, his son J R and his wife Betsy of Berwyn, PA and son Chris the former star of the ABC TV Series Life Goes On, also of Newtown Square, as well as ten grandchildren four great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Catholic Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in New York City on January 6 at 11am with a visitation beginning at 10am. Interment will be private. Donations may be made to the National Down Syndrome Society and The Center for Discovery.

I can only remember Mr. Burke with a broad smile on his face. He and his wife, Marion, were pillars of my childhood community. My sincere condolences are extended to the entire family and most especially to my friend, Ellen, who loved and admired her Dad so enormously.
