Dr. Selman, it's because of you I'm still alive. I wasn't certain we'd gell when I first started with you, but you held me together while my insurance got screwed up and reduced my # of mental health visits, you were one of the few that saw the cycles my life holistically & said, "Again? You really can't make this up." I trusted you implicitly. Getting the email with the reminder of your passing, realizing that it falls so close to my 55th bday, realizing that it is officially 20 yrs this November since you helped me stabilize... I hope that , wherever path your soul has traveled in the past 20 yrs, you are at peace. Thank you so much. You touched my life deeply.

I will always remember you with a smile, eating your chinese food, egg noodles, late at night when you came home from work.
You told me I should write a book about my life and maybe I will

I was a patient of Dr Selman for three years until I went into 'government service'. We stayed in contact via the net and he always expressed his concern for my well being. I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing and think of him often. Good luck my friend.

I was his patient for 12 years until 2012. He got me Social Security Disability, then well enough to get off it and get my master's. On and off disability, through shock treatments, a horrible marriage and an even worse divorce and then, in 2011 I got better. I wrote him an email today to thank him and tell him I'm in my second year of doctoral studies in psychology and I owe my life to him. I owe the love of my life to his unrelenting standards of what to accept from how people treat me. I wanted to thank him, I checked for his email. I wanted his family and girlfriend to know things I realized under his care. I won't cry because he will never be a reason I shed a tear--he always wanted me to be happy and that I shall be with his memory. I hope opening this was not a poor choice of showing how I care, but I want his family to see what I saw in him. It says not to submit original poetry, but I'm a published author of it, and I would like to share with those who loved him what I saw in him. There was so much he could do, it was amazing. Even typing 100 WPM on a typewriter with no errors. It used to fascinate me. I had thought he was the grandiose one in the beginning, then I saw he could back it all up, and there was always more to him--and this is without knowing the specifics of his personal life, but he shone through being just any MD. He was more than a doctor, he was a scientist. He would sit with his hands together by his chin and truly listen--not just to my words. He knew me, like nobody really does. I understand who he was because I've only seen greatness that once.

The Great Divide

The water rushes along the banks
across The Great Divide.
The roar so loud, one cannot hear
me weep and heave and sigh.

You were a stranger in this land,
your brilliance held you apart.
But in you was a fierce loyalty
whose innocence broke my heart.

Through love of you I conquered my fear
of this life and of my reticence.
And I tried to wrap my mind around
a being of such magnificence.

If I could have but one more chance,
I'd come calling at your door.
But the laws of nature have me bereft
as the sky proceeds to pour.

I will try to pass the time, Selman,
on your memory my hopes ride.
And I aspire to find you once again
across The Great Divide.

Thank you, Dr. Selman, for everything, always.

Harold was my first cousin and we grew up together in East Meadow. I have great memories to reflect on. So sad to see him leave but I know he is with my mom, Aunt Lily who adored him! My deepest regrets to his mother, father and brothers, his children and his partner, Ronnie. You are all in my heart.

I've learned so much from this man.. He was more than a doctor to me but a friend. Had amazing conversations, truly listened to your problems and analyzed them in a way to help you open your eyes to a different light. I see the light now, thank you so much for all your words!
