JOHN HYLAND Obituary

HYLAND--John (Jack) W., Jr., investment banker, avid gardener, tireless advocate for the arts and education, as well as published author, has died on August 11, 2017. He was much loved by his spouse, architect Larry Wente, his three children, Liza Bainbridge, Jonathan Hyland, and Susannah Hyland, and his former wife Karen C. Hyland. Born in Detroit, MI on January 29, 1938, Jack was raised in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from the Haverford School, Williams College (B.A. Theoretical Physics), and received an MBA from Harvard University. His early career was spent at Morgan Stanley as partner and head of corporate finance. He had many passions, including involvement with the American Academy in Rome (Chairman Emeritus). He was also a longtime member of the boards of the Clark Art Institute, the College Art Association, National Building Museum, and most recently the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. For the last fourteen years, Jack was co-chairman of the board of Teachers College, Columbia University. His books included a biography of his grandfather "Evangelism's First Modern Media Star, The Life of Reverend Bill Stidger," and a thriller "The Moses Virus." He had just completed a sequel entitled "Einstein's Dilemma." Jack was known for his kindness, equanimity, mischievous humor, his curiosity and magnanimous heart. He touched many lives, and will be sorely missed. Donations in Jack's name can be made to Teachers College, Columbia University. Please contact Linda Colquhoun at 212-678-3679, or [email protected].
