JOSEPH PEQUIGNEY Obituary

PEQUIGNEY--Joseph. Professor Emeritus of English, Stony Brook University, died at home in Manhattan on January 19, 2022. He was 97. Joe is survived by his spouse, Steven Mays; his sister Margaret Cashion of Jackson, MS; and several generations of nieces and nephews. An influential teacher and scholar, he is the author of "Such Is My Love; A Study of Shakespeare's Sonnets," which became a milestone in Shakespeare and gay studies. Joe Pequigney was my Shakespeare and Milton professor when I was an undergraduate English major ( I went on to get a Ph.D and become an English professor myself). He was a memorable teacher, enthusiastic, insightful and very kind. I remember him pacing the front of the classroom and musing out loud, as if to generously share his thoughts with his students. I am so grateful to have been his student.
