JULES BLOOM Obituary

BLOOM--Jules (Julie/Joe) of Roosevelt Island, NY, died Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 91. The beloved son of Ruben and Leah Bloom, he was adored by his family and many friends. Jules was predeceased by his devoted and much-loved wife of 55 years, Florence (Liz). He will be deeply missed by his daughters Janet and Amy; brother Sam and sister Adele; son-in-law Terry; grandchildren Lauren and Mara; sisters-in-law Donna and Malvina; nieces Debby and Rona; nephews Matt, Harry, David, Ron, Paul, Warren, William, and Edward; as well as many great-nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A lifelong New Yorker, Julie was a WWII Army Air Force veteran of the Italian Campaign, and a brilliant and engaging history teacher and administrator for more than 30 years. An early and indefatigable fighter for social justice, he was passionate about every aspect of life, and believed in individual responsibility and the power of collective activism. An avid and accomplished tennis player, classical music lover, movie maven, and voracious reader with encyclopedic knowledge of history and political science, he was a true Renaissance man. Jules was a loyal and devoted friend, a charismatic personality with an unquenchable joie-de-vivre and a rich, contagious laugh who relished good conversation. He will long be remembered for his humor, intelligence, and energy. Services will be held at 11:30am, on Sunday, February 26 at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, LI.
