Mary Elbo Lim, M.D.

Mary Elbo Lim, M.D., of Manhattan, New York, passed on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, peacefully in her sleep at her place of residence since the 1970's. She was 91 years old.

She was born on March 21, 1932 in Santa Cruz, Laguna, Philippines. She was a pioneer of her time, being a woman pursuing a medical degree and graduating from University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. She immigrated to the United States to complete her residency and fellowship, settling down in Manhattan, New York to become a life-long New Yorker. Throughout her career, she was dedicated to her work passionately serving as an attending physician in the emergency room at the Metropolitan Hospital Center and as a practitioner at HIP of Greater New York, contributing greatly to the city by caring for its residents.

She enjoyed traveling and frequent cruises exploring our planet from her ship cabin while watching sunsets over the ocean horizon. When not traveling, she relished the many fine eating establishments and theater performances throughout New York City with her five life-long friends.

She had an immense love for her family and friends and positively influenced their life paths, guiding them by using her lifetime worth of experiences and humorous anecdotes. She was demure and gracious. She had a big heart and was very generous and thoughtful to everyone around her. Her strong faith led her to St. Ignatius where she was a devout parishioner, attending Mass weekly and participating in other liturgical celebrations.

No matter what she was doing, going to church or meeting friends, she loved to dress up and she always looked perfect and put together. Her patients would only see her in her white lab coat, not knowing underneath, she was immaculately dressed.

She is survived by her sister, Aida, nephew Reynaldo, niece Suzheila, grand niece Diane and her soul sisters, Mely, Fely, Itas, Marina and Edith. A memorial service will be held on January 19, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Saint Ignatius Loyola Church, at 980 Park Avenue, Manhattan, New York. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Ignatius Loyola Parish Liturgical Music Fund.
