MARY POOL Obituary

POOL--Mary Jane. Mary Jane Pool, age 97, died in New York City on January 12, 2022 of natural causes. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Dorothy Pool, and is survived by her brother Earl L. Pool, Jr. and his loving family. Born and educated in Missouri, she attended St. de Chantal Academy and Drury University. After graduation she moved to New York City to enjoy thirty-five years on the staffs of Vogue and House & Garden magazines. She was Editor-in-Chief of House & Garden through the 1970's, a time of exciting innovation in architecture and design. News and ideas from around the world enriched and expanded the content of the magazine during her editorship. Her interest in education and the arts lead to a number of appointments to boards and committees -- The Decorative Arts Trust, The Isabel Oneil Foundation and The American Friends of Blerancourt. Her work was noted with several honors, including an Edith Wharton Women of Achievement award in 1999, an honorary doctorate of humane letters from her Alma Mater Drury University in 2002, and in 2013 she was designated a Distinguished Member of the Colony Club. The Pool Art Center honoring the Pool family opened at Drury in 2004. She was the author of the books The Gardens of Venice and The Gardens of Florence published by Rizzoli, and Gardens in the City -- New York in Bloom published by Abrams. She was co-author of The Angel Tree -- Celebrating Christmas at the Metropolitan Museum of Art published by Abrams. She celebrated her own good life in New York, and in Springfield, Missouri where she will be buried.

Patty Simone

January 19, 2022

A treasured memory of Mary Jane and Dorothy was the celebration they joined us for our daughter Emily´s baptism at St. Thomas More. 23 years later, Mary Jane was an honored guest at Emily´s Barnard graduation, having provided constant encouragement and support for all those years. The Simone family offer our deepest condolences to Earl and to all of the Pool family.
