Maurice Murphy Obituary

1940 - 2021
Maurice Anthony Murphy, age 81, died peacefully with his daughter, Margaret Mary McQuillan by his bedside, on St. Patrick's Day, his favorite holiday, March 17, 2021, in his beloved New York City, New York.

"Murph", as he was known by those who loved him, was born in the Bronx, New York, on January 23, 1940 to his parents, Beatrice Heffernan from Crossmolina, County Mayo and Bryan Murphy from County Kerry, Ireland. He attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine School and graduated from Villanova University. Upon graduation from college, he enlisted in the Army where he was honorably discharged following the death of his father. He married Mary Slane in 1965. They had three children together, Elizabeth, Douglas and Margaret Mary, and later divorced. Murph went on to live on the upper east side of Manhattan, a neighborhood that he loved and where he had many dear friends.

Having a long career in life insurance, Murph worked for Aetna, John Hancock Insurance Company, and Bankers Life Insurance, to name a few. After retiring, he found joy in volunteer work, giving Communion as a Eucharistic Minister at his local church, nursing home, and to the home-bound. He also loved his work for Angel Flight which provides free air transport for passengers in need of medical treatment.

Besides spending time with family and friends, Murph had a passion for walking all over Manhattan, reading, playing card games, watching Villanova basketball games, talking about his love for Ireland, being involved in his church and enjoying breakfasts and dinners out with friends. Murph had an energetic personality, was full of stories to tell, jokes to share and laughs to give. He was loved by many and touched the lives of others fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his three children, Elizabeth, Douglas, Margaret Mary (nee McQuillan), his four grandchildren, Michael, Max, Genevieve and Luke and his sister, Margaret.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass on Monday, March 22, 2021 at 10:30am, at St. Catherine of Siena Church (411 E 68th St, b/w York & 1st Ave, NYC). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital/Smilow Cancer Center at www.givetoynhh.org/lukesfundraiser.
