SYDNEY WEINBERG

WEINBERG--Sydney Stahl, of New York City, died on November 20th at the age of 83. A graduate of Barnard College, Sydney had her two children while still an undergraduate. She earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University, and was a devoted teacher of American history at Ramapo College of New Jersey. A lover of learning, Sydney was founder and director of Ramapo's Master of Arts and Liberal Studies program, an interdisciplinary program, through which students could study what they wanted, the way they wanted. Sydney married Gerald Tenenbaum, the love of her life, in 1996. They enthusiastically traveled the world together until his death in 2016. Sydney was a voracious reader, talented artist, phenomenal cook who hosted spirited dinner parties, and sailor who taught herself celestial navigation and could spot a squall cloud quickly enough to avert disaster. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by daughters Deborah and Lee, Lee's partner John Bloomfield, and brother Jay Stahl and his wife Carole.
