Mattie Hughes Obituary

Funeral service for Mrs. Mattie "Lou" Harper Hughes, 73, a former resident of Auburn will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, April 24, 2008 at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church with interment in Hughes Memorial Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge, Alabama. Rev. W.L. Muse will officiate.

Mrs. Hughes passed away Saturday, April 19, 2008 at her home in Florence, Alabama. She was the daughter of the late Lewis and Nancy Harper. Mrs. Hughes was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Florence and a former member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Lee County Training School, Alabama A & M College and the University of North Alabama. She retired from the Florence City School System as an advance English teacher. She held membership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. as well as, several other national, state and local organizations.

Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Survivors; her husband, Robert T. Hughes, Florence, AL; children Michael (Jo Anne) Hughes, Springs, TX, Yolanda Hughes, Mableton, GA and Nanci Hughes, Sandy Springs, GA; grandchildren, Michael (Christina) Hughes, Turner Hughes and Elizabeth Hughes; a brother, Curtis Harper, Chapel Hill, NC; sisters, Barbara Ann (Vernon) Murray, Ocala, FL and Patricia (George) Echols, Auburn, AL; a sister-in-law, Maggie Harper, Madison, MS; a brother-in-law, Fred Hughes, Pleasant Ridge, AL; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers and green plants, donations can be made to the Children Advocacy Center of Florence, Alabama or your favorite church or charity in the name of Mattie Lou Hughes.
