James "Jack" Herrin
James "Jack" Herrin, 90, departed this life on May 7, 2015 after a 13 year courageous battle with Alzheimer. Born March 5, 1925 to Al and Willie Herring in Newbern, Ala. He was a longtime member of the Akron community and very active in AA. Jack dedicated decades of his life celebrating his sobriety and supporting other members of AA through sponsorships, transportations and any other service that was needed. Jack would often have his car full of people taking them to and from meetings at the community center home group. In the AA community, he was known as the "Cadillac Man" .Jack was a very giving man, some would say he gave too much, but he loved people and was always on the go lending a helping hand. Jack had a deep love for his family. His children meant everything to him. His grandchildren were also his most cherished possession never to be taken away. His last spoken words to his daughter was "I am proud you are my daughter and no one will ever change that."
Jack was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a life time member of the NAACP (Akron Chapter). James retired from Goodrich Rubber,after 30 years of dedicated service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Willie Herring; wife, Jessie Lockett-Herrin; two brothers, Al and Joseph Herring; three sisters, Willie l and Georgia Herring and Fannie Banks; son, Larry Herring.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Lawrence Herring of Texas, Dwayne Herring of Georgia; and Rebecca Herrin-Shepard (Mac) of Akron; sisters, Lydia Myrtle and Blanche, all of Akron; five grandchildren, including Wesley Shepard of Atlanta, Ga. and Whitney Shepard of Akron and Hodgie Herring of Texas; two special nieces, Regina Herring and Minerva Brown; and long time special friend, Ida Jean; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 327 Cuyahoga St., Akron, Ohio 44310 at 12 Noon, where family will receive friends from 11 until time of service, Rev. Dr. Luther C. Cooper officiating. Interment at Glendale Cemetery. Condolences for his daughter, Rebecca and grandchildren can be sent to 973 Hartford Ave., Akron, Ohio 44320.
