Philip M. Hamilton

SILVER LAKE -- Philip M. Hamilton, 74, passed away September 22, 2007.

Mr. Hamilton was born in Akron and had resided in Silver Lake the past 36 years, moving there from Cuyahoga Falls. He retired in 1995 from Evans Savings Bank (now Key Bank) with 35 years service and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls. Philip attended high school in Toronto, Canada where he was all city running back. After graduation, he was invited to attend the training camp of the Philadelphia Phillies. He returned to the area to enter the University of Akron in 1953. He was elected president of Theta Chi Fraternity the same year Joyce Tate became "the sweetheart of Theta Chi". An estimated six million attended the wedding of Philip and Joyce. They were married Nov. 14, 1957 on an NBC-TV program called "Bride and Groom." Bandleader Sammy Kaye was a guest at their wedding. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Cuyahoga Falls and had served on the Board of Directors for Taylor Memorial Library. He was instrumental in organizing the Ronald McDonald Golf Classic, loved to fish at his cottage on Tappan Lake, enjoyed vacations with his family at the ocean and loved watching his grandchildren in all their sporting events.

We'd like to express our deepest sympathies to the entire Hamilton family in their time of grief. We all morn the passing of Phil. However we take solace in the fact that Phil has moved onto a better place, and he will continue to be with all of us in mind and spirit. He enriched all that he touched. The quality of those he leaves behind is a testament to the quality of the man.

I am so sorry to learn of Phil's passing. Having met Phil and Joyce at Tappan Lake I was fortunate enough to have spent some fun filled, lazy days with them and the rest of their family. I remember Phil sitting in his chair on the deck, chuckling at whatever the grandkids might have been doing at the time. He also had many suggestions as to how "Scotty" should handle the repair or chore that was at hand. You had a kind word and a pleasant laugh each time I saw you. I will miss you Phil, rest in peace.

My sincerest sympathy to Phil's family. I had the pleasure of working with Phil for several years when I served as Treasurer and as President of Akron's Ronald McDonald House. Much of the success of the Ronald McDonald House can be attributed to the excellent relationship we enjoyed with Key Bank and employees like Phil. He was an astute business man and a fine person. May your memories of happier times help to sustain you during this difficult time.
