Richard Calvin Brown, Jr., 78, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 18, 2009.
Richard was born April 26, 1931 in Dechard, Tennessee, to Richard Calvin and Fannie Elizabeth Brown. He attended Akron Public Schools. He matriculated at Kent State University, after graduating from North High School. Richard was reared in the Coburn Street Church of God, Akron, Ohio. He gave his life to the Lord at Refuge Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield, Ohio and later joined Second Baptist Church in Akron, Ohio where he was ordained to the deacon ministry in 1987. Richard was drafted into the Army in 1951. He fought in Korea attached to the 101st Airborne Division, 351st Group, and 28th Trucking Company where he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He received an honorable discharge in July 1953 and received a commendation medal for meritorious service with ribbons pendant. He fought in four major battles. On August 30, 1953, Richard was united in holy matrimony to Sara Alice Finley and to this union was born two children, Ernest and Richelle. He was employed with the City of Akron for five years and retired from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after forty-six years of service. He exemplified the gifts of help and serving. Throughout his life he enjoyed following his children in all of their endeavors locally and nationally. Some things that he enjoyed were sports (he was an excellent bowler), trying out new restaurants and cooking. Richard was a committed husband, father, grandfather, great-grand-father, father-figure, loved one, provider, protector, and friend to many others. He served Akron faithfully as a community activist.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard, Sr. and Fannie Brown; brother, Howard R. Brown; his sister, Donna M. Brown; son-in-law, Byrone Gaines. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 55 years, Sara Alice (Finley) Brown; son, Ernest Calvin (Antoinette) Brown, Sr. of Springfield, Ohio; daughter, Richelle J. Speigner-Gaines of Akron, Ohio; sister, Gloria Peavy of Greenbelt, Maryland; grandchildren, Ernest C.
