Walter Beller Obituary

Walter A. Beller died February 14, 2010.

A successful business executive on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, he was born on November 12, 1931, in Zweibruck-en, Germany. During World War II, he survived the Allied bombardment of his hometown, which he described in his memoir, ``Between the Lines: A Boy's Survival in the Combat Zone, 1939-1945.' Later, he earned a business degree and played on a semi-professional soccer team. Groomed for an executive career, he became one of the youngest CEOs in Germany, heading Turbolufttechnik, GmbH, which designed large mine fans and wind tunnels for automobile, aircraft and rocket test stands throughout Western European and East Bloc nations.

In 1975, Mr. Beller spearheaded his company's joint venture entry into the U.S. market with an American partner. As CEO and board chairman he led TLT-Babcock, Inc. in Akron, Ohio, to financial success. After he retired to Sarasota in 1993, he continued to serve on the boards of several companies and startup ventures while pursing his love of golf as a member of Prestancia Country Club.

In 1988, Mr. Beller became an American citizen. In gratitude to GIs saving his life, he regularly contributed to American veterans' associations. In addition to his wartime memoir, he was the author of ``On Two Continents: My Business Adventures in Europe and Germany,' which is being published posthumously in May.

Mr. Beller was married to Eleonore K. Beller until her death in 1992. He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl L. Beller; his daughter, Tina Lee Horwitz of Alpharetta, Ga.; his stepdaughter, Rebecca Wolcott of Chesterland, Ohio; his four grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews in Germany.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 292 E. Market Street, Akron, OH 44308. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Walter A. Beller's name either to the First Congregational Church or to Greyhound Adoption of Ohio, 7122 Country Lane, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023.
