Mitchell Baker Obituary

Mitch BakerMitchell Rutledge Baker, 81, a dedicated loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, with admiring family and cherished friends at his side. Mitch was born February 27, 1928, in Oklahoma City, to Menter Gray and Xuria Ratcliff Baker, moving from OKC to Muskogee, OK, at the age of 10. He later graduated from Muskogee High School with classmates he held dear. He entered the University of Oklahoma in 1945 and graduated in 1950. Upon graduation he began a 47 year career at American Mortgage and Inv. Co. He was a well-respected businessman, enjoying his work immensely. Many co-workers became like family to him. In Feb. 1953, he and Fleeta Spears were married. Believing that marriage is a sacred covenant with God, they shared a joyous 56 year union. Mitch thoroughly enjoyed OU football, fishing & traveling. He only missed two OU home games in 64 years. Like so many OU fans, he was "born and bred." Mitch will always be remembered by his kind, gentle, loving spirit, his integrity and his love for his savior, Jesus. Joining family and friends who have preceded him in death are his beloved daughter Amanda Baker Baze; parents Menter Gray and Xuria Ratcliff Baker; in-laws Houston Andrew and Bernice Landers Spears; brother Menter Gray Jr.; sister Marge Garrison; sister-in-law Nell Baker; brothers-in-law Bruce Willingham & Jim McAndrew, Arnold and Elie Willingham. He is survived by his admiring wife Fleeta, his son Andrew, who filled his heart with joy, Drew's wife Kristi his "daughter in love", and two grandsons Nicholas and Mitchell Baker. His "son in love" Scott Baze, granddaughter Abby Baze, grandson Lucas Mitchell Baker Baze, great-grandson Asher. He is also survived by stepmother Rachel Baker; sister Jean McAndrew; sister-in-law Helen Ruth Willingham; brother-in-law James S. Garrison; step brothers & sisters and their spouses Deb & Leon Penn, Cecelia & Jack Perky and Stuart & Deanna Ryser. He is also survived by his special caregiver, Vonda Haley, who has become another "daughter in love." The family wishes to thank Faith Hospice for the unequaled treatment, comfort, compassion, care, laughter and love they showered on Mitch and his family through such difficult times. Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 25 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Kernke Chapel, 14624 N. May Ave. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: The Multiple Sclerosis Association, 4606 E. 67th St., Ste. 103, Tulsa, OK 74136 or Alzheimer's Association, 6465 S. FLeeta,
I was very fortunate to be associated with Mitch during his career at AMICO. He was very supportive of his "AMICO" family and it was a
joy to have the priviledge to work with Mitch. May God bless you and your family as you deal with the loss of Mitch.

Sincerely,
Marsha Williams (AMICO 1977-1986)

P.S. I will always remember your individual cheese cakes that Mitch
would bring at Christmas time.

Dear Fleeta, Lynda Beth just emailed me the news of Mitch's death. What a shock and then to find out the memorial service has already taken place. You both were vital people in the lives of the youth of our MYF at Epworth. We thought we were your children. I'll never forget that you took Lynda aside and taught her to "hug." You and Mitch were wonderful examples of Christian marriage. How greatly he will be missed. I will talk with you soon.
With love, Martha (Moore) Bradley

Mrs. Baker, you and Mr. Baker have been part of our family my entire life. I think of you and the 'group' often when I talk to Mother and Daddy. May you find peace and love in our Lord, your family and friends. Let them carry you. Love, Susan Stone Skinner
