(Jent Monk) J. Medicine Hat Obituary

J. Medicine Hat (Jent Monk)

Passed away August 13, 2012. Though best known for sharing his laughter with tens of thousands of fans across the country, he gave in equal measure the warmth of his smile and the charity of his heart. His comedy spread joy to audiences nationwide; his generosity spread hope and heat to the families of Pine Ridge. More than a performer, he was a selfless father, loyal friend, and a courageous advocate for Native Americans. He is preceded in death by his father, S. Earl and his son, Cody. He is survived by his wife Tracy; mother, Bonnie; and stepfather, Larry; his daughters, Jenny, Kelsie and Lauren; and his granddaughter, Liberty. He also leaves his brother, Kent and wife Nancy; his sister, Angie and husband Jerry.
The family and the Funny Bone of Omaha will be holding a MEMORIAL SERVICE September 9th from 2-5pm at the Kroc Center, 2825 Y St, Omaha, NE.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of J. Medicine Hat. I knew him as Jent Monk, and we worked together at a comedy club in Michigan in 1988. I remember hanging out with him after the show one night and watching the World Series when the Dodgers were playing the A's. It was the game when Kirk Gibson hit his home run to win the game in the 9th inning. I was sitting with Jent, and right before Gibson hit the home run I said 'He's going to hit it out right here.' Next pitch - BOOM. Everyone in the bar heard it, and an eerie silence came over the whole room. We laughed about it for years afterward, and I teased him later that that night was what inspired him to be a hypnotist. He really found a great niche for himself, and I always liked him. We didn't cross paths in the last few years, but we'd never had a falling out or anything like that. Life just leads people in different directions, and I'm very sorry we didn't get a chance to cross paths in a long time. This is very sad news, as he was so young and full of life. Much comfort and peace to his family, and may his soul live on in us all. Peace.

This is very sad; I worked with him many times in the Cincinnati Clubs. Such a great man and entertainer. Hats off to you J! You will never be forgotten and I highly doubt anyone can come close to what you do!
