Mentzer, Jean C. (Sorgie) passed away February 19, 2014, in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born August 9, 1935, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Joseph and Isabelle (Londino) Sorgie, who were Italian immigrants. She was baptized in the Roman Catholic church and was raised in Plainfield, New Jersey. Jean met her future husband, Jim, a native of Missouri Valley, Iowa, while working for the United States Army at Camp Kilmer. They celebrated their wedding Mass at St. Bernard's Church in Plainfield, New Jersey, on June 18, 1955. Their three children, Pamela, Kathleen and William, were born in New Jersey. They moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa, in 1963. Jean enjoyed being a homemaker and was an excellent Italian cook. Her favorite pastimes included: reading, crocheting, knitting and gardening. Jean was passionate about her love for family and animals.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James L. "Jim" Mentzer; grandchildren, Anne Dunlay and Paul Batchelder; and sister, Elaine Martoccia. She is survived by children; Pamela Mentzer Batchelder (Stuart), Kathleen Mentzer Dunlay (Robert), and William L. Mentzer; grandchildren: Ryan (Erin), Andrew, and Mary Dunlay, John and Maria Batchelder, Tony Richardson, Megan Combee, Will Mentzer, Ashley Herrman and Alysha Mentzer; great-grandchildren, Madeline and Max Dunlay; sisters, Marie Patti and Joann Bacino.
HOMECOMING AND VISITATION Saturday, March 1st from 9:30am to 10:30am at New Cassel Retirement Center Chapel, 900 N. 90 St. in Omaha, followed by MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL at 10:30am. Memorials to Nebraska Humane Society. HEAFEY-HEAFEY-HOFFMANN

Jean was part of my childhood, She was a beautiful woman with a captivating laugh. We had many happy times at the N.J.Shore and at sleep-overs. Our lives parted when she moved to Iowa but she will always be in my memory Rest in peace Jean you overcame a difficult life and turned out a wonderful lady, Mickie Donatelli God Bless You Palm Beach Gardens , Florida
