Bradley Hogue Obituary

Bradley Brown Hogue Jr., age 88, of Athens, died at home on Thursday, June 6, 2013, with his two daughters by his side.
Brad was born on August 15, 1924, to B.B. Hogue Sr., Editor of the Dallas Times-Herald, and Sara Hogue, in Dallas, Texas. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and later a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, often flying from aircraft carriers. While in the U.S. Navy Reserves, he was called to active duty, doing his flight training in Athens.
Brad earned his Bachelor of Arts from Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas; his Master of Education from the University of North Texas, in Denton, Texas; and his Ph.D. in Education from Louisiana State University, in New Orleans, La. He taught elementary school, was a Principal, and was later a university professor at the University of North Texas; Sam Houston State University, in Huntsville, Texas; Louisiana State University; the City College of New York; the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly USWL); and Lamar University, in Beaumont, Texas.
Brad had a sharp wit and keen sense of humor, and enjoyed birding, canoeing, and backpacking. He founded the Beaumont, Texas, chapter of the Sierra Club; served on the Board of the Audubon Society; was a member of the American Birding Association; and led numerous backpacking trips, from the Grand Canyon to Iceland to the Swiss Alps. He was an opera buff, an avid birdwatcher, a Shakespeare enthusiast, and loved doing live snake presentations. His last birding trip was to the Dry Tortugas, at the age of 82, and he had more than 500 species on his Life List.
In 2010, Brad was included in a World War II Veterans' Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., visiting the World War II Memorial, Korean Memorial, and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Predeceased by his first wife, Betty, and his second wife, Winette, Brad is survived by his daughters, Caroline Hogue and Kathleen Owings, and his step-daughter, Lisa Allen, and son-in-law, Terry. He treasured his grandchildren, Colin Norman, Teague Owings, and Adrian and Parker Allen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 498 Prince Avenue, Athens.
