Edwin McDaniel Obituary

Athens - It is with heartfelt sadness that our family announces the death of our dear husband, father, and grandfather, Edwin Augustus McDaniel, on June 20, 2008. Throughout his long battle with three cancers and dementia, Ed demonstrated his usual dignity, humor and kindness. Ed was born October 16, 1935, in Lavonia, Georgia, to James Edwin McDaniel and Mary Frances David McDaniel, but the majority of his life was spent in Athens. Ed attended David C. Barrow Elementary School, Athens High School and the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. For most of his adult life he was a mortgage banker. He was a member of the Athens First United Methodist Church where he was a long time usher and over the years was a member of the Athens Country Club, a director of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, and active in many charitable and civic projects. A lover of the outdoors, Ed enjoyed the companionship of his friends and family while hunting, fishing, kayaking, hiking and camping. Ed is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Palmer McDaniel and his sons Lance Edwin McDaniel (wife Marisa, sons Mercer and Griffin) of La Plata, Maryland and Mason Palmer McDaniel (wife Kristin, sons Palmer, Mitchell and Matthew) of Athens. He is survived by his sister, Celia Daniel of Tallahassee, Florida, and brother, Jim McDaniel of Otto, North Carolina. The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home on Monday, June 23 from 5 - 7 p.m. His brain has been donated to the Emory Neurological Research Center. A private memorial service and scattering of the remains will be held at a later date. The family asks that in memory of Ed, you enjoy a walk in the woods or along the beach with someone you love. If you would like to donate to a charity in his name we suggest you give to the UGA Foundation, Harry Loef Endowment Fund, 394 S. Milledge Avenue, Suite 100, Athens, Georgia 30602.
